Sun Yue Update: Yue out for season Pg. 3

The Los Angeles Lakers today assigned Sun Yue to the team’s NBA Development League affiliate Los Angeles D-Fenders. Sun is the 28th assignment of the 2008-09 season and the first from the Lakers to the D-Fenders this season.
Sun, a 6-9 guard from China, has appeared in 10 games with the Lakers this season, totaling six points and two assists in 28 minutes. He made his NBA debut on Dec. 7 against the Milwaukee Bucks and scored four points on 2-of-3 shooting in five minutes.
Just hit the wiretap a little while ago. What do you guys think about this move? i've set up a poll to see wat you all think of Sun Yue and to get ppl's thoughts and opinions on him. IMO, it can't hurt to leave him in the D-League. I think he has potential to do damage in this system, he'd be a nice big pg to have in the triangle once Fish is gone if he properly develops but idk how that'll turn out. So far Phil has yet to give him a consistent time so he's probably not ready to contribute. Hopefully he can by next season, otherwise we do have Shannon Brown

I was wondering when they're going to place him in the d-league. He just doesn't have what it takes... He needs to build the confidence as well so that PJ could give him more minutes. At least in the d-league he can have more PT and gain more experience before playing in the NBA.
So.. would this mean more of shanon brown... morrison... powel...?

does this mean we are signing someone?
i'm not sure if assigning him to the d-league opens up a free roster spot

^Doubt it. We already had a open roster spot. Yea, I think this should of happened after the first month of the season.

He does need some confidence and esperience. I still think he has justifiable potential. I mean- he wants to play D has great size and is far more athletic(but weak) than he gets credit for. Clearly though he's not that close to a real NBA career. Maybe he'll make some progress over the rest of this season and offseason.

I think it speaks to something that he wasn't sent to the D-League earlier...
Either we were worried that much about our guard depth (doubt it since Sun didn't even play when Jordan was injured), the Chinese government didn't allow PJ to place him the in the d-league (mostly a joke....), or we wanted him to actually learn our system. Practice with our guys. Be apart of the team. Which hopefully means they still have faith in his future as a Laker.
The real reason, though?
He didn't get the In-N-Out fast enough. Dude got demoted.

backup PG is as much potential as he could hope for
big point, skilled, all he needs was confidence and familiarity, something he wasnt getting playing garbage time minutes and not playing at all
hope he does a jordan farmar/von wafer and make that jump back to the NBA sooner rather than later

I love to say I told you so. Some of you guys are so wierd thinking Sun was gonna be good. He is not an nba talent. Never be a rotation player. Probably not an nba talent and if he does at best will be a journeyman who plays on 12 teams in 5 years. Just like Kwame who so many of you liked.
Also I haven't been here alot but I am assuming some of these same crazies think Adam will be a good player. He is not an nba talent either.

“This is a great opportunity for Sun to gain additional playing time while still being able to continue on the NBA level,” Phil Jackson said in a statement. “Your rookie year is a learning process and the more time you get on the court, the better you will be for it in the long run. I am impressed with Sun’s basketball talents and am hopeful that he will play for the Lakers for many years to come.”

“This was not pre-determined,” Kupchak said. “We discussed it several times during the course of the season. It goes without saying, he’s going to play minutes.”
The D-Fenders have 14 games remaining, including a return game Saturday in Anaheim, against the Arsenal. Sun very likely will play in that game, according to Lester, Kupchak and Jackson.
“He hasn’t played this many minutes in a long time but he looks very comfortable,” Kupchak said, at halftime of Friday’s D-League game. “It’s going to take him awhile to get his rhythm and timing down, and become acclimated with his teammates.”

ive got more faith in mitch kupchak than i have in you
recently, lakers draft choices have been luke, sasha, bynum, turiaf, von wafer, farmar, samb, crittenton, sun, marc gasol and joe crawford
so far:
-luke, sasha, bynum, turiaf, farmar found niches to fill with the lakers
-turiaf, von wafer, marc gasol have gone on to become staples for other teams
-crittenton has gone on to be a nice young player at washington
-joe crawford was a 58th pick and wouldve probably never amounted to anything
sun might not amount to anything significant, but a 6-9 PG who we know can play well (as witnessed during the olympics) and grandfathered into the triangle can still become a contributing member
and with jordan, shannon, brown, ammo, sasha, bynum. lakers still have a very young core, and they will improve sooner or later
all it takes is proper coaching, playing time and committment

i actually voted on him being a nice back up but i think with the right care he can develop into an All-Star, the coaching staff just hast to have confidence in him, right now his potential goes as high as the coaching staff allows him, in the sense of pt. it'll be tough for him to crack the rotation behind Fish and Farmar
