Josh Powell has been a great pickup for us

Post#1 » by TonyMontana » Fri Mar 13, 2009 4:59 pm

As you guys all know I have always been a great supporter of Josh Powell since there were talks about him joining the Lakers.
I think with the loss of Ronny, he has been a great addition to our lineup and I love his game and his aggressiveness. He is long and mobile, he's also a beast under the glass and works his ass of on the lowpost who has contributed a lot on rebounding both on offensive and the defensive side of the glass. He knows how to box out and makes a great plays.
As he is getting more minutes he has proven to everyone that he has earned his role on the bench and this team.
All I can say is that picking him up was great for us and I think he will see more playing time as we start getting ready for the playoffs.
Am I alone on this?
Also whats parts of his game do you guys see that needs improving.
Also looking at the Cs P.J Brown last year, is Powell our version of P.J?

He has been great in Ronny's position, I have absolutely nothing to complain about... I think Mbenga has been pretty good too, he is very foul prone, but he is a great shot blocker and has a decent high post jumper

You are not alone @ all TM. There was a thread earlier in the year where I believe me & Deep3 said we would not miss Ronny @ all with the addition of Powell. The only thing Ronny brought to the table that Josh doesnt is his energy. I totally think him & Mbenga are our P.J. Browns this year. Me & few other we screamin 4 Phil 2 play him more & a thread was made that we should have kept Mihm oved him & now that thread has fallen to abou the 3rd or 4th page. I think the only thing Josh needs 2 work @ a little more is always knowing where 2 B defensively. Sometimes he gets lost & it costs him cheap fouls.

Completely agree with you Tony. I love Josh Powell's game. His aggressiveness is my favorite part of his game because its something this team lacks, he and Mbenga are DEFINITELY our PJ Browns. Both can clean up the boards and both have a decent mid-range jumper, with Powell's being more consistent than Mbengas.

I love that Phil gave him his start, kid's been having a great season for us considering he was here to spell Ronny lol I agree he's an upgrade over Ronny minus shot blocking & energy. I really hope Phil gives him some good minutes from here on out and into the postseason.

I love what Powell brings to the team. It's been a long time since we've had a young, strong PF on this the Lakeshow. I want him to be our Ho Grant kind of guy....

Only problem is once Bynum comes back, does Powell get enough minutes? Do Powell and Ariza make resigning Odom unnecessary?

Ya I think he will still get good quality minutes, since we're not going to rush Drew back and also keep in mind Phil does tend to roll with what is working for him at that time, so if we continue with making progress with Powell in the lineup then chances are were going to stick with those key players as we have seen in our lineups lately.

I'd be disappointed if we don't find a way to keep Powell around for a while. Josh is a balla.

Some of us are quick to forget what Turiaf did for us. He was special. He had heart. He had energy. He was the consummate teammate. Sure, he floundered the the finals when the Lakers needed him most--but it was not just him. Let's try not to make that his last impression on us.

Now Powell, to me, at first, he was just another addition to this team (see: Aaron McKie and Jimmy Jackson in recent years). I mean, the Clippers let him go without a fight. But he has surprised me the last few weeks. First, it was an occasional impressive offensive rebound (whoa), but now, he's hitting open face-up jumpers that seem to go in--everytime, a few put-back dunks in the past couple games. A burst of energy; without the sideline dancing. I'm very giddy about him right now.

Josh--just don't go disappearing in the playoffs.

Na............. Everybody and every Laker fan appreciates Ronny his game his heart and what he brought to this team, but time and money made us part ways, yet nobody forgot him as you can see when he returns back to LA, he gets a lot of love from everyone, but he had to move on and we had to move on, it happens in buisness and life, but take the amount of money we are paying for Powells services and let me know if Powell isnt a much better bargain than Ronny?

He's been contributing greatly. I love his attitude. Very bright guy, and humble, too. Same thing goes for Ariza.

yes he has. i think alot of people need to start mentioning mitch as a great gm also. not saying people here, but alot of people i know personally were all over mitch, after kobe went in on him. since then mitch ket kobe, and bynum. got pau, also got trevor and powell. looks to me he is a great gm. powell has been better than ronny imo. ronny played bigger than he was,and was exposed against good teams. no one can really run over powell. he is a great big guy and he knows exactly how to use it.
Only on realgm is 27,000 points, 5 rings, 1 rs mvp and 2 finals mvp considered overrated!

He reminds me very much of Udonis Haslem. he's becoming one of my favorite players on the team because he doesn't get fancy, boxes out, hustles and works under the boards and does the simple play right. Check out his salary too.

Here is what I said when Powell was signed: "Great signing who brings about the same overall impact as Ronnie. I ike the "Mourning half way through the season" if Mihm is not fully healthy. Mourning is not ready to start the season and may be ready later. Powell is a better rebounder than Ronnie which we will probably need more with Odom at SF some of the time."

Below is the link to all our old comments. Am I the only one to say "Great signing" at the time?

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=833229&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I feel vindicated as I was one of the few who consistantly aurgued against matching GSW offer for Ronnie and said he could easily be replaced for far less money. Of course I also aurgued that resigning Sasha had to be far bigger priority that Turiof.

Yeah EE it was like night and day between him and Vlad, who bitched and moan while Josh just sat calmly and waited for his chance. Yet he cheered his teammates and supported them even when he wasn't getting major run like now.

No. Every poster on the three pages before your post said pretty much the same thing.

He's been fantastic so far. Good players seem to play out of their skins for contenders but I think he's had this potential for a long time. Doesn't foul much but provides the defense and rebounding you need all through the game and I like his attitude especially on the offensive boards.
