Kurt: Phil worried how Fisher might take a demotion?

Lakers Defensive Consultant - Kurt Rambis
05-15-09
Podcast Interview

Short Summary:

PMS: Coach, I don't know if this is being too specific, but I look at Derek Fisher and see a minus 16 overall in this series, particularly in the 1st quarter of the game -- consecutive missed 3-pointers, and turnovers. He's just been out of sync, shooting 7% (SEVEN %) from behind 3-point arc. Is this a bad match up for Derek? How concerned are you?

Kurt: When you get into the playoffs, so much of whether you win or lose is determined by match-ups. You have match-ups that favor you, and match-ups that you try to solve the riddle to. In terms of speed and quickness, we have not done a good job in containing Brooks. It's a deficiency in Fisher's behalf -- his footspeed in terms of defense in guarding somebody. But he, or Farmar, or Brown don't always get the overall team help to stop somebody as quick as Brooks is. Bigs don't like to be challenged and shown up by little guys. But some point in time, you just gotta give hard fouls and put him down; make him realize he doesn't belong in the paint. Andrew and Pau combine for 5 fouls, but they've got more fouls to use and should use them.

PMS: So do you think Fisher is still he best option in that position to start the game?

Kurt: I don't know what direction Phil is going to take. We always sit around in coaches meetings to talk about line-up changes and possible rotation changes; those are conversations we always bat around ideas with. But it's up to Phil to implement them. He's gonna have to go with his gut feeling. And sometimes you have to make that adjustments, but you are always worried as a coach that when you demote somebody, how are they going to handle it mentally? Do they stay strong? It's something, if this does happen that Fisher will be able to handle very well, or would you lose him completely? So not do you only have him be at half speed, but you might have him at no speed. A good example might be Sasha -- his game has suffered from losing some time from Shannon Brown.

If Phil somehow gets Fisher demoted to the bench, I just hope he accepts that new role like Lamar Odom did.

Tell Fisher to foul Scola hard again. That will solve it.

Fish has no choice but to accept it.......at this point it's about advancing, not getting beat because somebody wanted to start.

Word.

If fish wants to earn some respect and recognition as a true professional, he should bench himself for the benefit of the team.

When Derek Fisher was suspended from Game 3, the Lakers won every quarter.

Fish should tell Phil that he's not against it if Phil wanted to do that.

Fish will be valuable against Billups, he needs to just man up and accept that he's not right for the Brooks matchup right now. If anything it shoudl be the veteran that accepts this easier. Bynum and Odom and Walton have already done it, why doesn't Fish step up?

Wow, is our coaching staff seriously worried about the feelings of an ineffective player over winning a series that should not have even gone 7 games? I love Derek Fisher. He's a great guy, and someone that has helped us get to where we are. BUT, right now his weaknesses are being exploited and we have failed to adjust. That's a problem.

Fire this coaching staff already, win or lose. I've been barking about this all season long, and now here we are, facing elimination to a team missing 2 key pieces.

Agreed, SS.

I've noticed this a lot recently...PJ has seemingly become sentimental, lost his competitive edge.

To me, this has trickled down to everyone on the roster (Kobe included). I feel like our team's inability to play consistent, that lack of killer instinct stem from Jackson.

I really hope that whenever he decides to retire, that Dr. Buss doesn't promote one of our assistants as head coach. As Rambis' complete failure to get D out of this squad shows, they just don't have it.

Let's just hope PJ can ride off into the sunset soon.

well i think phil has gotten the message. i fully expect farmar to start or at the least be inserted as soon as brooks burns fisher which should be on the first couple of plays...

Fisher would be the last one whining about a demotion when we face a do or die situation in the playoffs and having coached him for so many seasons, Phil should know better.

However Fisher coming off the bench doesn't come into the scheme of our 2nd unit either which thrives on fastbreaks.

The best way is to start Farmar. No matter Fisher can't take it mentally, We're doing it for the sake of our team. Fisher has to understand that.

Farmar on Brooks. He knows Brooks' game from the Pac 10 battles and outplayed Brooks or played even and his team won. He plays Brooks with a confidence that he does not show in other matchups.

Fisher on Lowry when Lowry is at PG. Lowry has a strength game the Fish can match. He does have open court quickness but does not just blow-by in the set offense like Brooks. He does more damage off screens and rebounds which Fish can match.

Brown and Farmar together when Lowry and Brooks are in together. Lakers have won this every time the two young Rockets guards play together... but lost it every time when Fish was in instead.

Also, what about going big and forcing Brooks out of the game if he starts to heat up.
Kobe, Ariza, Luke, Odom, Gasol.
They'll have to put Brooks on Kobe or take him out. If they put him on Kobe... post up game.
Why Luke and not Bynum... keep the middle open and another outside threat.
