Lamar's Candy Habit May Affect His Play

Post#1 » by MAMBAEMD » Mon Jun 1, 2009 5:15 pm

This is from an article by Mike Penner in the LA TIMES today:

In an essay titled "Lamar Odom, Sweet Tooth and Erratic Play," Dr. Daniel Amen writes that Odom's massive consumption of candy leads to a sugar high and then a crash, evidence of which can be seen on the basketball court.

Writes Amen: "Odom freely confesses that he just can't help himself when it comes to the sweet stuff and always keeps a stash on hand of Gummi Bears, Honey Buns, Lifesavers, Hershey's white chocolate, Snickers bars, cookies and more. He eats the sugary snacks morning, noon and night, and even says he sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night, chows down on some treats, then falls back asleep.

Of course it's this one doctor's opinion and I think it is a stretch to link Lamar's play over the last 10 years to crashing from a sugar high. His inconsistent play may be due to many other factors.
But if this really is true, the Lakers should hire the best nutritionist in town to work with Lamar. Aside from the possible improvement in his play, eating less candy will be good for his health.

This is so funny!!! I was just saying the same thing yesterday to a buddy of mine. I hate to make too much of it, but I'm a true believer in eating right for success (both mentally and physically).

I told my buddy that Lamar's inconsistent play is so analagous to sugar highs and lows. He's either amazing or non-existent. There's no inbetween with him.

Jim Rome today ripped Lamar Odom for his candy addiction. I honestly hate that prick, but he had a few good points on feeding Lamars habit so he stays up during the game. Anyone going to the Lakers game take Candy with you and toss it to Lamar as soon has he messes up lol.

I think it could very well be big part of what makes him so up and down. I know because I have a serious sweet tooth. Somebody give him his vitamins everyday and he won't be as up and down.

He'll never hear the end of this...

I disagree and think people would make more of a big deal out of it if he wasn't the 3rd (4th with a healthy Bynum) best player on the team.

He seriously disappears for several games in a row, then steps up for a few games, and then goes quiet again.

After Bynum went down Odom started playing like a beast, then after 6 games or so fizzled down, he just can never put together a stretch of more than 10 games at a high level.

I love him though and he is a great player.

Diabetes on the horizon.

Don't the Lakers monitor their players' health?

Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised if Lamar's usual fade late is due to sugar crash.

Good find, lakerRD.

Wow, what's funny is that I had the same issue when I was playing college hockey. It's real too, I'm positive this could really be an issue with his play. Sleep is one thing for sure, but an actual crash is pretty debilitating for high end athletic activity.

I'd love to see that change... milesfides has it right.... even not full on Diabetes minor diabetic reactions and hypoglycemia isn't cool.

I think it may also have a lot to do with his past injury problems I have heard that it is much easier to get injured and it takes longer to recover when you consume a lot of sugar/have a lot of sugar in your system etc. and that if you eat right and consume enough water you are less likely to get injured

His mood doesn't seem to be up and down since most players admit he's the coolest guy in the locker room at all times but if it does lead to bad decision making, its got to be controlled.

I guess that explains why he's my favorite player, lol. I'm a month older than Lamar and I eat probably as much candy as he does a day. I don't smoke, I don't drink, I have no other vices, but I can eat a pack of skittles with a pack of Rolo's in about 10 minutes flat.

Hilarious story. What I don't get is why it wouldn't have been publicized before. I guess his approaching 30th is a time to scale back?

lol that's awesome, didn't know that about Odom.

Guess players on both teams this series have some strange habits. I'm a magic fan... Hedo Turkoglu eats pizza before games and dwight howard claims to eat mcdonald's on some game days.

That piece on Lamar's candy addiction was downright frightening
to watch as he speeds towards Diabetes.

This guy will not be a world class athlete forever. If he continues
the sugar habit after he slows down/retires he's asking for health
problems.

It would be ashamed to see him lose limbs or sight, etc. and look
back at this piece that was done prognosticating the onset of
Diabetes.

PLEASE STOP THIS UNHEALTHY AND PREVENTABLE OBSESSION LAMAR.
