Rockets fans- Trevor Ariza Questions?

Post#1 » by DraftBoy10 » Fri Jul 3, 2009 3:45 am

Stunned to see this MLE trade first, to say the least. I think Houston got him at the expense of his agent trying to hit LA back, but whatever. Congrats on acquiring Ron, I loved him in Houston.

But I feel these are the expectations from Ariza.

We feel he can be in the same caliber of a Battier, but in a different mold. Rather bigger, more athletic, and just that superb glue guy. You think he can achieve that? With the Rockets in a retooling process, I think Ariza provides the new Battier, glue guy that these great teams have.

Wish you the best of luck with Ron, and have no problem fielding questions on him, as I feel 50% of fans hate him, the other 50% don't eve know his game ...and they are both because of popular opinion not fact.

Ariza is my man!!!! I am so sad to see him go but his agent was being a total jerk and a disgrace to all agents in basketball. But you are getting one HOT guy who can play basketball in Houston. A lineup of Brooks, McGrady, Yao, Shane and my BF is pretty damn athletic if you ask me. The question is can the Rockets be healthy? I know you will be without Yao next year but if you tread water and get McGrady back in midseaon I think you guys can be dangerous. You took us 7 games without 2 superstars.

Good luck to you and please comeback and give me update on my boy =)

He 90% of the time has positive impact on the team. Great defender in the lane, can't defend bigger and stronger SFs. Shot the ball well from the three in the playoffs. He is really young. Only thing you have to worry is him turning into those contract year players like Minhee's ex-BF Sasha, who also gave her claps and was gay.

Clutch shooter when open. Athletic as they come. Plays from tip off to buzzer with a passion. Doesn't take dumb shots. Harrases passing lanes. Smart player.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about him playing well on his contract year. His defensive mindset has always been there since leaving UCLA, and while he's not going to shoot 40% behind the arc like this postseason he can at least hit a jumper here and there. The only problem is he's more susceptible to foot injuries than the average person. I don't quite understood this deal because there's too many questions surrounding the Rockets core, and no team should ever jump on signing role players when the status of the star players are unknown. The deal itself isn't bad, the timing of it is.

Ariza SHOT 32% This year. Stop overrating his 3 point shooting because of the playoffs.(See Lamar Odom)

He has improved during the course of the season. 32% is not bad considering he was dead cold in the first half of the season.

Well since everybody gave up the "feel good" story, I'm going to give you the real. You Rocket fans are going to realize soon the his play was a byproduct of playing with Kobe and Pau. Trevor isn't a creator, and the Triangle offense suited his skill set. T-Mac doesn't draw the aggressive double team Kobe does, and Trevor is about to find that out on opening night.

Bottom line is this , I have nothing against Trev. He's a hard working guy, nice easy going demeanor and good teammate. He'll be missed.

Man.. it really sucks that Ariza has to go. HIs stupid agent is making a big mistake for playing hardball. I wish him the best of luck. Artest is a another caliber player but coupled with ariza would have been awesome.

Good luck ariza!

unless he does a u-turn and stays with us hehe

He hustles, and he fits the Rockets in terms of snappiness and playing hard.

I echo the concern that his offense is more a product of the attention Kobe and Pau receive as well as him fitting perfectly into the triangle SF role in the playoffs(he was playing off the bench for a large portion of the regular season). If he continues to work hard on his all around game then he could still put up similar numbers, we'll just have to wait and see on that front.

On the defensive end you'll love what you're getting 90% of the time, he'll get whistled for a foul or gamble and get burned the other 10%. He'll always be giving the effort you want to see as a fan though so its easy to forgive his rare mistakes on D. Houston was already a tough defensive team so I see him fitting in well in that aspect.

Mixed Emotions for me today. Just got home from school. I'm happy and sad. I'm happy that we landed Artest but sad that Ariza is going somewhere. I thought he wasn't going anywhere. Ariza will bring a lot of energy for you guys. He hustles and does his best. I hope he keeps getting better because he'll be missed.

Did ariza benefit from having the attention on kobe and gasol? yes he did.

So yes, he isn't going to be a first option for any team. No where close to what artest would provide offensively. But ariza is young and the rockets are trying to get younger while waiting for yao to recover. The rockets will probably re-tool to get someone in 2010 to play with yao and have some good young roleplayers that are worth their salary and rockets can have some success.

Ariza is a good kid, glad you paid him, but he is not going to start over Battier...

Well said. Well said.

Someone went as far to say, earlier in this trade, that "Ariza doen't take dumb shots." Ariza being exalted to much is very befuddling to me. He was a very solid role player who improved his game this season because of Kobe, Craig Hodges, and Phillips encouraging him to shoot when open. I won't miss Ariza, because we have Artest. Simple as that.

Could Ariza have been a solid foundation for the future? Maybe, but we'll get to see what he plays like in Houston now as he's going to be asked to do a lot more, and can he really do a lot more? He has very suspect handles, he can't initiate on offense, and he still gets pushed around by bigger SFs.

So, Ariza is going to have tokeep on working on his outside jumper to prove that this past season and especially post-season were not flukes (I'm sure some of us hardcore Laker fans remember when Luke was supposed to have turned the corner and was shooting lights out from the outsides...just a few seasons back..and look where he's at now). Ariza is also going to have to hit the sto get stronger, because he's still slight of built and gets pushed around easily by stronger SFs (Carmelo, James, Artest, and Pierce quickly come to mind), and he's going to have to work on his handles and play-making ability if he wants to truly improve his overall game. And most importantly, he's going to need someone to motivate him. Unless he's already found ways to do that. Let's face it, Kobe and other on the Lakers pushed him to improve and to be more of a fiery competitor, because that is not a part of Ariza's true nature.

I don't see this being a good fit for Houston, because Houston needs more play makers or players that can create their own shot easily, something which Trevor is not and cannot do. In fact, at the moment, Battier has better handles and play-making ability than Ariza does..and that's not good. So, either Houston needs to trade Battier to bring over a two guard that can create his shot, or hope that McGrady comes back and stays healthy. However, playing Ariza next to Battier on offense, will not be a good thing for Houston on the offense side. Defense? sure, in the perimeter defense they will be better with that duo, but not that's about it.

Ariza is going to learn, this is what happens when you let an agent flap his lips and make you look like a pud all around. I'm not saying Ariza is pud, but his agent made him look like he was. Also, he's going to learn that those easy looks he got in LA are going to be a lot tougher to come by while in Houston.
