The Man Who Encouraged Kobe After 08 Finals Loss

After Kobe Bryant and Ron Artest got into that "war of words" in March back in Houston, I asked Kobe what he really thought of Artest.

"We're friends," Kobe said, "I like him a lot--like his game--always have."

Then he told me a story that makes today's news--Artest is supposedly on his way to LA for three years, $18 million--very likely to happen.

Kobe said that after the Lakers lost game six of the '08 NBA Finals in Boston by 39 points, he was alone in the shower, just fuming. He heard somebody walk in and assumed it was one of his teammates, or maybe a staff member. Instead, he looked up, and it was Ron Artest (to this day, Kobe has no idea how Artest got into the locker room).

"I want to come help you," Artest said. "If I can, I'm going to find a way to come to LA and give you the help you need to win a title."

Kobe didn't think much of it, especially since Artest still had a year left on his deal with the Rockets, and that the Lakers were returning an entire team that had just won the Western Conference. Plus, players talk like that a lot, and it's just talk. But it struck Kobe as a nice gesture, especially since he had just been hammered by the Celtics and nobody was saying much of anything. Kobe told me that the perception a lot of people have of Artest is wrong.

"He competes....every night, every play," Kobe said. "I've known him since high school and he's always been like that."

Kobe found it strange that some people in the media were portraying he and Artest as enemies.

"He wants to win as much as I do...and I respect him--a lot."

When you consider that Artest and Lamar Odom grew up playing together in New York, this move makes a ton of sense. Artest gets to play with two good friends, for a coach that has always spoken highly of him.

Over the years, I've often asked Phil Jackson specifically about Artest's "colorful" nature. Phil never takes the bait, always shifting the conversation to something about how competitive Artest always is. He speaks of Artest the same way he speaks of Dennis Rodman. You'll rarely hear Phil comment on how weird Rodman was, just that he adjusted to the team culture once he came to town. I imagine that if the Artest deal goes through, he'll treat Ron much the same way.

By the way, if the rumored deal was to go through, it leaves the Lakers with even more money to keep Odom. Think about this: they would be getting Artest for less money than Charlie Villanueva just signed for in Detroit. Trust me, there isn't anybody who knows basketball who would rather have Villanueva than Artest. The only downside to this deal is that the it leaves no room on the roster for Trevor Ariza, who was been fantastic in his time with the Lakers. But truth be told, Ariza and Artest play the same position, and Ariza didn't want to play for that money. ESPN is already reporting that Ariza has agreed to sign in Houston to replace Artest.

Very interesting. Makes me appreciate Artest a little more. I can try to imagine the heavy thoughts of losing an NBA finals series, and man that's real depressing. Looks like Artest was aiming to be the hired gun for Kobe for years. I can't wait to see this badass bully our enemies next year.

On another thought, how'd Artest get in the shower room? Creepy.

I love Artest as a player. He's not as dirty as people think he is (well he's not a raja bell or a bowen but it'll do). His defensive style for SF is different from others, while other great defensive players rely on their speed and quick hands, Ron Artest is able to use both his body and quick hands. Kinda like a Dennis Rodman with an offensive game. I can't wait for the season to start.
THANK YOU ARIZA FOR EVERYTHING YOU'VE DONE THIS SEASON.
THANK YOU MITCH!
WELCOME RON ARTEST!!

i agree with the toughess over the soft label now. and believe this, artest is ferocious on the glass relative to his size. he will battle underneath. that addition is a big help to gasol, bynum and lamar.

an interesting thing is i remember reading an article in 08 about artest being mad how KG and the celtics came into sacramento and beat them by 15+ points. artest mentioned how there were about 2 minutes left in the game and KG made some kind of athletic dunk and started screaming and hollering afterwards despite being up nearly 20 points. artest said he would remember that moment forever. the interviewer asked artest why and artest replied because he's going to do the same thing to him some day.

I believe with every atom in my body that Artest has been waiting his entire life for this moment.

I also believe Kobe has been waiting his entire career to have somebody like Artest to get his back.

This is the Robin Hood + Little John story.

The elbow/neck incident this playoffs was their joust.

Artest has been searching his entire career to be the Rodman for a worthy Jordan.

And he's found him.

Thanks for posting this top secret story. This is such a terrific story, it's the stuff of legend. Epic stuff.

I see it. first Lakers-Celtics meet, there's going to be a scuffle between Ron and KG with Bynum caught somewhere in between

I've been waiting for Artest to end up in LA since he was with the Pacers. Finally he's there and I'm thrilled. I love what Ariza did for us but I'm thrilled with Artest replacing him.

Artest will get his chance at revenge, I really hope it comes during the Finals for the entire world to see.

MAN MILES I LOVE YOUR POSTS MANG............... NO HOMO.
The reason I love your posts is that you speak my mind as well as other posters on here but with feelings and meanings to backup your posts. Your like a poet where me and my posts are simply saying it like I feel it, so here my take on this in my version.

First of all GOOD FIND luffy props brahhh... a very good read.
Also.

Very strong and grab my balls and say it like I want to say it on the behalf of Artest to walk in and let Kobe know that he will be there and he wants to be a part of this franchise and to play along side of a team like the Lakers which inlcudes his boy (L.O) and the best coach and the best player in the league.
So props to Artest for what he did, and all I can say is this is seriously scary to see these two guys along side of each other, the dedication the heart and the commitment to winning.
Artest has battled with Kobe many many many times and he has come short but now the same guy he battled is standing next to him willing to throw it down with him and fight for a title.

THIS IS SCARY TO ME. In a good way............... All I can say is I wish preseason started today.

FTW and FTC.
GO LAKERS............. WE ARE THE CHAMPS AND WE ARE COMING BACK FOR MORE. PUT THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN TO BED. YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS A WAR IN 2009 LED BY THE ASSASSINS OF THE WEST.

Ahhh let's not discuss the whole shower thing with other teams though...k?

Artest: Kobe I know you feel down and out, but I can see you have big balls... the kind that win championships.
Kobe: Ok man, can we not talk about balls? I'm kinda upset here.
Artest: That's fine Kobe... I'm gonna come to the lakers then I'll show you all I have balls too, though.
Kobe: how bout we just win some chips Ron?
Ron: I'm gonna teabag pierce for ya Kobe, you just wait.
