Odom's FA thread- john ireland: 4yr report false, no deal
Posted: Fri Jul 3, 2009 3:34 pm
by DubaLakers
D Fisher
Bryant
Artest 6M, MLE
Gasol
Bynum
Bench: Odom 10M
Is he still going to come off the bench and be happy?
Will LO now think differently about coming back to LA now that Artest appears to be in P&G?
In turn is Mitch thinking any differently today regarding Lamar, now that it appears the LAL have Artest on the roster?
Hmm, I'm not sure.
Exciting stuff. How much of an advantage do the LAL have playing in LA as a destination, getting Artest for the MLE, wow. CLE? SA? POR? I'll take LA, lol. The nightlife and opportunity for endorsements helped sell the LAL to Artest, he's going to be a star on some level...
"Ka-Boom!" Oxi Clean works on my floors", says Ron Ron "I guarantee it!" "Well I knew a guy in Queensbridge that used to clean his floors with baking soda and his own spit, that dude's floors were the best I've seen, but this is second best"...."Cut!"

If it wasn't for Artest being in Sacramento, there was a window Artest would have been in LA last year. Lamar and Ron have both publicly stated they want to play with the Lakers together in the past, signing Ron now means nothing other than Ariza lost his deal.
Lamar will probably get 8-10 by the end of the month.

We need Lamar's touted glue guy presence in the locker room with Ron Ron and he did prove to be a unique weapon off and on all last year. Just pony up and bring him back... his agent is working this from the right methods and Lamar did a good job of anything we asked last year.

Without Lamar our bench is borderline bad. Every great team needs a 6th man. Also we need some big-man insurance both in game (foul trouble) and for injuries. Then there's always his rebounding ability which nobody on this team has shown consistency on the boards like Lamar. He was born to rebound.
Really I could go on forever. Lamar is still what makes us special. Artest or not.

ABSOLUTELY. Big man, especiallly athletic big man are so difficult to come by. Odom is so much more important than Artest and luckily, very few teams could possibly sign him to the money he wants. Odom has to come back or all these moves just weakened the team.

Lamar is a big priority. Hopefully the lakers get him back.

Odom is absolutely a priority. Without him they are not the favorites. With him they are the best team in nba history and if you think about it that is to be taken literally. Odom is worth more then Bynum. We can't assume we can count on Bynum. On top of that we don't have backups for alot of positions and Odom can backup every position.
I hope it doesn't take to the end of the month and I hate that they are playing hardball. I was hoping an agreement has been reached and I hope he signs the same day as Artest and him and Artest have the press conference together.
To me the stars of the Lakers are
Gasol
Odom
Artest
Kobe
Bynum has not proven himself to me at all.

Also like I said in the other thread if they are worried about the money which seems to only be about 2 million dollars they can totally cut corners when it comes to pg's now. Now they have 3 stars who can bring up the ball and make plays and Kobe is really the pg anyway. They don't need to upgrade the pg spot which could save them money. They could let Brown go or trade Farmar for cash or even both and then get a no name pg who can be a third pg after Fisher and Sasha.
And the great thing about Odom is with him if Kobe needs to sit you dont need a backup 2 you can insert Odom same for Fisher, Artest, Gasol, Bynum.
They can have a rotation of
Bynum
Gasol
Artest
Kobe
Fisher
Bench
Odom
Sasha
Powell
DJ
Walton
Farmar or Brown.
We could just let Farmar and Brown walk this and next year to save money to and let Fisher walk or have him sign for real cheap as he will be very old and just a Shammond WIlliams or basically any pg that can play D o.k. and hit a wide open shot. With this team Smush Parker would be enough as a starting pg. We can't get him because of what he said but that is how important Odom is. If they become cheap with Odom they need a much better backup big man and a better pg.
They need to give Odom 3 years 30 million or 4 36 ot 5 40million.
It's not even expensive. It's fair market value. They need him. Guys like Lee are getting those type of offers and even though maybe because of age you can say Millsap and Lee would be better for our team Odom is a much better fit and arguably better then those guys so we need to see on the homepage Odom and lakers reach agreement on contract.

we gotta have Lamar.
I think we can get away with replacing Artest with Ariza, but we can't lose any pieces. Lamar was a big part of the bench and our success last season. Mitch needs to sign him, and keep him in the purple and gold.

Were not getting away with Artest for Ariza that is a super upgrade. The fact that it will extend Kobe's career and make him have alot more energy in his 30's make's it the best move all offseason by any team. Now if Odom doesn't return all that is moot because we will not repeat unless Bynum stays healthy and breaks out but that is slim to none plus Odom could end up going to Denver or a team that we might play so bottom line is us getting Odom literally decides if we will be the best team ever who breaks that 72 game win record and 4 peats or who is a solid team but certaintly no guarantee for anything.
With Odom nobody has a chance to beat us or even take us to 7 games. Even if the Spurs get Sheed and Blair is Roy they couldn't take us to 6 and if the Celtics get Sheed they wouldn't be able to either.
We need Odom.
Plus Odom is one of Ron's biggest selling points as they were queens friends and we all know how much that means to them. I am from queens to so I kind of get it.

In terms of importance on the team, its:
1. Kobe
2. Gasol
3. Odom
If we lose Odom, I'd call this offseason a failure. Odom is a MUST

Lamar is key if we want a good shot at repeating.
When Odom comes in off the bench to face the opposing team's bench the rest of the league collectively groans. No one has a player off the bench who can match up with LO, and no other team has a insurance policy as talented if either of our front line starters get injured.

Well the LAL are already 20M over the cap without signing LO, I just wonder what Mitch is thinking right now after he pokered a deal in FA for Artest. You guys seem sure that LO is still int he plans, I'm not so sure myself.
...You guys didn't see or like my joke, bummer...

Odom can play pg and help out on DHoward. We won because of him. I agree on importance wise Odom is 3rd and if we lose him it will be a failure because that means we were being cheap and stupid because we could have cut corners somewhere else and if Marion gets 9 million so what if we in the end have to give him 9 or 10 million also. 8 is good but it is on the low side unless it's like 5 years 45 million.

I think by acquiring Artest, LO are good friends with Artest, I dont think LO is going anywhere. He's better off the bench than a starter. No doubt LO will be back as a Laker this season, he can always sign a new contract after this season.
