Sun Yue

Post#1 » by Gek » Fri Jul 3, 2009 11:25 pm

According to the scouting reports I've been able to scrounge up via Google, Yue is supposed to have good lateral quickness on the defensive end and scored a decent 10.68 in the agility back in the combine (higher than Chris Paul, Shane Battier and Deron Williams), which should be improved upon. His sprint speed was mediocre, but we don't need him to be sprint, just get in front of some of the peskier PGs in the league. He is big at 6' 8" and lanky with a 6' 9" wingspan and has bulked up a bit since he was drafted 2 years back ('07 right?). He rode the timber most of the years and I think has had some problems with some illnesses (none were injury related, just most likely welcome to the new super-usa germs type of sicknesses). If Yue works improves his lateral agility a bit he'll be up to Aaron Brooks level agility and could easily be a defensive agitator for smaller pesky guards.

If all else fails we trade the 5 Mill expiring of Morrison for a decent defensive point guard - even nate robinson sign or sign and trade (idk if he is restricted or not)

Sun Yue still does not have the speed and quickness to keep up with the Chris Paul's and Aaron Brook's of the NBA. I've seen Sun play for a couple of years now and I don't think he could be defending PGs in the NBA full-time. If the Lakers bring back Shannon Brown, maybe they could have Brown guard Pgs on defense with Sun sliding to the SG position.

Ideally if the Lakers were to retain Sun Yue, the position I think he ultimately plays in the triangle is a backup SF. The problem with that is that his wingpsan becomes average if he's asked to defend Sf's.
If he plays PG on offense, he eventually just ends up becoming a spotup shooter ala Derek Fisher. Even though I have seen improvement in Sun Yue's shot, he's still inconsistent but then again many players have shown they can improve with more training and playing time. If there's anyone I would compare Sun Yue to in the Lakers offense, it would be a upgraded Luke Walton. The two things that stand out to me about Sun Yue's game so far have been his passing and his ability to block shots. He's not really a scorer, but more of a distributor and trying to find the open teammate.

The Lakers were supposedly negotiating with Chinese officials to have Sun Yue on the summer league roster before they make a final decision to keep him for next sesason.
However as of right now, he's been back with the Chinese National team.

Here are some pics:

Mitch Kupchak mentioned that he wanted to try and keep the roster at 13, if that's the case it seems like Sun Yue's chances are slim. Not to mention, the Lakers are a veteran team and I'm not sure if Phil Jackson nor other Lakers players have the patience to see a unproven player like Sun Yue develop. If the Lakers were to do some trades, such as getting rid of Adam Morrison or Farmar maybe it's possible Sun is back on the Lakers roster. If the Lakers decide they want to keep Sun Yue regardless of the 13 players roster, I think they have until August 1st to guarantee his contract.

He's not on the Lakers summer league team, so unless China has a team in the summer league again for him to show his stuff, I think his chances are slim. Too bad, had high hopes he mightve been a steal.

He''ll be traded this summer, I think. I can't see him having more time on the court.

I've always said this about Yue I think he's the new Slava which means he's a project I think the Lakers want to keep him around for at least 1 more year to see what he does.

lakers aren't letting him go. if anything he'll bring in more chinese revenue in addition to what kobe brings. put him in the rotation and they'll get more chinese investment. he's a hard worker and won't slack off once he signs a deal

this

dude said he put on 20 lbs of muscle, but hes still skinny as a stick...

he mightve played point his entire career, but at the lakers, that would amount to just initiating the offense

if can feel the nervous-ness and anticipation of a player when he's on court... that's not a good thing. that's how i feel when he's playing... shoot and hopefully he makes it in.

Since he's not on the summer roster (unless it's incomplete), he's probably going to play in china, dleague maybe... or possible trade.

I hope they ship morrison, sasha... maybe luke and farmar... and get an above average pg....

Sun Yue was a rookie last year, I think people are forgetting this. Phil doesn't play rookies much as is. Not to mention, he is easily #4 on the depth chart if Brown re-signs and continues to be given minutes at the 1. Moving Yue is only a nightmare for us. We could luck out against certain spot up SGs, but otherwise, he would likely get outplayed on both sides of the ball if he isn't playing point.

I think his future with the Lakers when his contract expires, depends greatly on if Fish returns or retires next summer.

then he has to play on summer league but he's in china for FIFBA asian tournament which start sometime in august. I think his future is depends on this offseason changes, if mitch can bring in some PG with minimum, there's no spot left for Sun Yue and if he cant, then he might just exercise option on sun yue.

If we can save his salary for next season we should cut him now.

asians do well in tests

he showed flashes of potential. some foul calls on him weren't fouls... just the defender jumping in on a non-star player when yue was goin gfor the block

This was his debut. I say we continue to develop this guy. In his first minutes as an NBA Player, he looked pretty fluid running the floor. Not too bad. Once he gets that jumpshot fired up, there'll be no reason to get rid of him. I think he'll fit in nicely with us in time...maybe even becoming a slightly less-athletic version of the Trevor Ariza success story (sans the idiot Agent).

The reason I don't like letting him go is that you can't be successful that long money wise if you always wait to sign the big name stars instead of developing one.
