You are someone with a unique set of skills coveted by the higher ups in your industry. You want alot of monies because you spend alot of monies; some on weed, most on candies. You are 29 years old and this is your last contract. After your contract is over, nobody in the world would care about you anymore. You'll likely go broke because most people in your industry do after retirement. Because you didn't finish college and you're used to the good life, You have no discernible way to earn any income whatsover. Basically you want to milk as much money as possible out of your current boss.
I hope that answered your question.

That's not an answer.........you're stereotyping most of the guys of today's NBA.

That applies to a few ppl, but not everyone.
Like
Deep said, you're stereotyping.
Artest was available, and Ariza's over-aggressive agent f'ked things up for him.
Thanks for the memories, Trevor, you've matured into a better b-ball player, good luck in Houston.

I think as fans we over estimate championship rings. Remember everyone of these guys have egos. If you know Sasha and Walton are getting 6 mil and you are Odom you naturally think you are better than those guys so you should make more. Plus the owners are making plenty of money. Especially the large market teams like LA, NY, and CHI. The players think why don't I get a bigger piece of that pie.

Aint no money like playoff money.
Owners/player earn extra $ in the playoffs.
Mitch was a doing a subpar job as a GM until someone took a vested interest in the outcome and improved the outlook of the team from the leaders to the staff.
That someone should get some credit, and he hasn't asked for any money.
Championships aren't over-rated, if anything, they're under-rated.

^ +1 on what he said
If players really didn't care about rings and thus their leagcy in the league, you wouldn't see a guy like Ron Artest sign for the MLE or guys like Gary Payton & Karl Malone ride Kobe, Wade & Shaq's coattails from time to time.
If you ask Charles Barkley if he'd trade a year of his contract money for a ring with a winning team, he'd immediately take you up on that.

Maybe I worded that wrong. I think as fans we assume they will just come back and play for another shot at something special like winning a championship ring. Money is usually the deciding factor. Not every player weighs championships the same. Just ask AI.

Maybe Kobe could take a paycut in the future.

the list of players who do that isn't a long one, and it's mostly filled with vets who have made a fair amount of money already
i think SApuro might be onto something, championships are nice- and some players are driven by them (Kobe for one), but winning it all is a tough thing and most people won't
but money is something take everyone can get their hands on
and sure Charles would say that now, but if you asked him back in the middle of his career? i bet he would turn you down, thinking that he could get his cake and eat it too (win the championship- and keep the salary)
hindsight is 20/20
i think money is a more powerful motivator than we realize
