Hakim Warrick anyone?

Post#1 » by joe.linnen » Tue Jul 21, 2009 9:12 pm

What do you guys think of Warrick as Gasol's backup? I've seen him play at times but that's about it. I was just think that having hime run with our second unit and hime being a dunker that he would do well playing with them. If you agree let me know your reasons or if you disagree let me know you reasons.

SF:Artest/Walton/Morrison
PF:Gasol/Warrick/Powell
C:Bynum/Mbenga
SG:Bryant/Vujacic
PG:Fisher/Farmar/Brown

Warrick is only 219 lbs, as Gasol's b/u that is fairly light. Powell goes 240. Artest goes 260. Heck, even Walton goes 235. Now, as the 2nd unit SF backup, I might be inclined - if Hakim would take the minimum which would be a 500k or so paycut.

Did Memphis QO him or let him walk?

Gasol's backup? No.

Artest's? Yes.

It's time for Warrick to be bumped to the 3. Odom should be Gasol's backup, and hopefully Powell steps up and can keep Gasol's minutes at the 4 where he belongs. Morrison has potential to be reliable, but I think the upside in production from Warrick and Brown is much better.

We.don't.have.money.to.spend.

The only thing we have is the Vet Min. For Warrick that would be 750,000.

Warrick was nearly 12ppg and 5rpg for the Grizz last year, but thats in 25 min per gm which he will not get with LA.
He'd have to be willing to 1) take less money 2) take a big playing time cut.

Guys his age are looking to get Paid. They'll take less and go for the ring later. He's probably hoping to scoop up some Matt Barnes money or get his 3 mil QO from Memphis... not 850k or whatever his slot would be in the cba.

I loved Warrick coming out of Syracuse. I thought he was going to be a Freak like Amare and tear it up in the league. He definitely has the physical abilities. But it's the other part of his game that needs development. However, it's not like Memphis is known for developing young talent. So I say if we have a shot at him for cheap. Then do it. We have our present dynasty secured (pending Lamar). And our future dynasty looks decent with Bynum going to be who we build around. I'm all for signing young talent and giving them time to grow and develop to where they can hopefully be studs by the time it's Bynum's turn to take over the reigns.

This is the reason why I didn't mind the Morrison signing. It opened up more room at the SF position for Trevor, Sasha and the rest. AND it gave us a young kid who owned the college world but still needs to develop after his injury. If morrison doesn't pan it. Then no biggie we saved money off the Vlad contract. But if Ammo lives up to even 75 pct of his hype he had in college, then we come out looking like Geniuses.

even if there were interest how can Lakers afford him? I would think he would want at least 2-3mill/per yr.

if we can make it happen than hell yeah this man can ball at the three or the four. do not let the size fool you,but idon't think there is anyway mem let's him walk. would be nice though best fit out of everything else i have heard. mem has cap space and needs more after the randolph trade so we can actually get away with a ammo for warrick trade since ammo comes off the books next year. warrick can hit the three, nough said let's get this man a ring. side note-I promise LO will be back and I think ammo will be good, just not with us

He is a young player with upside. Would like to have him. He would be better than Morrison and some of the end of the bench players. He tends to want to dunk a lot. Guess that is ok.

That's nice and all, but we have no playing time for him and Luke is already the backup to Artest.

several teams can outbid us by a 50K, and he would take it in this economic climate.

David Lee anyone?
WE CAN NOT SIGN ANYONE EXCEPT MINIMUM PLAYERS. Who had someone making a thread about Warrick in the "People still can't get we only have the Min to offer" pool?

From ESPN

Hakim Warrick has just become a UFA.

That power forward is Hakim Warrick, who was taken by surprise Thursday night when the Grizzlies rescinded their $3 million qualifying offer to him to give themselves more flexibility on the free-agent market.

Again, he is not a PF. Maybe for Nellie but otherwise, he'd just be Artest's backup if he even beats out Luke.
Oh, and takes 750k.

Not happening.

I could see a sign and trade deal with Memphis, if they dont end up getting Iverson. We could send Ammo+Farmar+3 million in cash+rights to Elonu+future 2nd for Warrick (3 years/ 10 million). Instead of paying Ammo/Farmar 14.4 million this year, the Lakers only pay Warrick 6 million and Memphis 3 million. Thats a savings of 5.4 million. Lakers could still re-sign Odom, or choose to just go with Warrick and save another 20 million. Warrick could get all the back up small forward minutes, as Artest could slide over to shooting guard for 12 minutes per game. Memphis gets a good young point guard, and a small forward to fill a roster spot for 4.2 million total.

SF-Artest 24 minutes/ Warrick 24 minutes
SG-Kobe 36 minutes/ Artest 12 minutes

If Shannon Brown ends up being the starter, the Lakers would lack athleticism off the bench if it consists of Odom/Walton/Fisher/Sasha. Warrick would ad that dynamic to the bench, by taking Luke and Sasha's minutes. He also provides versatility, with the ability to play some power forward, if one of the bigs get hurt.

Im not sure if this works under the CBA but:

1. Lakers trade Farmar(1.9 million)+3 million in cash+future 2nd round pick to Memphis in exchange for Darrell Arthur(1 million). Memphis makes 2 million dollars off this deal and upgrades the point guard position and gets a future pick,

2. Lakers trade Ammo(5.3 million)+3 million in cash+rights to Elonu for a resigned Warrick 3 years/10 million. Memphis only has to pay Ammo 2.3 million.

Why for Memphis?
Memphis basically makes 300,000 and get Ammo, Farmar, Elonu and a future 2nd round pick for free. Thats much cheaper than going and signing free agents to fill roster spots. I believe, they currently only have 10 players on their roster.

Why for Lakers?
Instead of paying Morrison+Farmar 14.4 million, they pay Warrick+Arthur 8 million. Thats a 5.4 million dollar savings for the Lakers. They could then use the aquisition of Warrick as more leverage for the Odom negotiations. They could say, "hey we have signed somebody to replace you at back up power forward, so take this offer or leave it."

Hakim Warrick believe it or not has the potential to be a Trevor Ariza all over again. They both have the same frame, both are athletic. Warrick much like Trev prior to coming to LA ,just hasn't played with a team that can utilize his strengths.

I would go as far to say if the Lakers could land him it would be like getting a Trev clone back.Looking at the numbers Hakim is a better player than Trev, he just needs what Trev got..........a chance to prove it with better players.

Warrick is a better overall player than Ariza too and doesn't have any known physical faults like Ariza's foot. I expect him to sign for the MLE atleast.
