Lakers "Realistic PF" Alternatives

Post#1 » by One Love » Fri Jul 24, 2009 12:28 am

Assuming we can't retain LO or trade Morrison, Sasha or Farmar for a legit PF, I have created a list of viable alternatives that "should" accept a vet minimum contract to play with the champions and possible get paid more next year... I have assembled the list in my preferred order but as usual welcome your feedback:

1. Fabricio Oberto (6'9")
2. Joe Smith (6'10")
3. Tim Thomas (6'10")
3. Sheldon Williams (6'9")
4. Donnell Marshall (6'9")
5. Hakim Warrick (6'10")
6. Stromile Swift (6'9")
7. Fransisco Elson (6'9")
8. Brian Skinner (6'9")
9. Chris Mihm (7'0")
10. Ryan Hollins (6'11")
11. Ben Wallace (6'8")
12. Melvin Ely (6'10")
13. Malik Rose (6'8")
14. Robert Horry (6'10")
15. Leon Powe (6'8")
16. Michael Ruffin (6'9")
17. Calvin Booth (6'10")
18. Ike Diogu (6'8")
19. Rasho Nesterovic (7'0")

Obviously, LO has a skill set you can't replace with a one million dollar player... I personally really think Oberto would be a great complement to Gasol and hands down the best alternative as he is skilled, unselfish, boards and has range... Joe Smith is a solid veteran who will give us 8 and 8 when needed... Tim Thomas has a great skill set... Williams could add muscle and energy up front... Marshall proved he has some left in the tank and can spread the floor... I understand the list is long and a handful add little to no value but I cross reference a handful of websites and wanted to be comprehensive...

Leon Powe could have been a fantastic asset but he's injured till Feb I guess.

From that list I'd take Joe Smith or Melvin Ely, but I WANT LAMAR BACK!

Joe Smith is the best of the bunch.

I don't think Hakim Warrick is available, otherwise I would love him on the Lakers. Otherwise, that sorry-ass list (with maybe several exceptions) is just another reason why we NEED to bring back LO.

Cross Oberto off. And honestly, I think Josh Powell is better than anyone on that list except a healthy Powe and maybe Diogu, who's shown some flashes.

I never thought I'd say this but if Odom leaves I'd take Tim Thomas from that list.

This guy can still give a solid 20+ minutes off the bench and shoots 42% from 3's...on this team that could prove to be invaluable since Ron Artest can go down on the block in place of Odom.

He's also still athletic enough at 32 to stay with guys like Rashard Lewis.

How about a solid Center backup instead so Pau never has to play C?

Pau (36), Powell (10), Ron (2) can handle the 48 PF mins.

Maybe Charlotte will take Ammo back in a $ saving move for Nazr Mohamad? They save over 8 mil (1.3 this year and all of Nazr next)

Someone show this list to Mitch and Buss. THEN they'll move their ass and get Odom back.

oh and I would probably go with a Shelden Williams type. A young player that could find his niche with limited risk and expectations.

....going against my hate of Duke.

+1

good 3 pointer, he can stretch the floor for us, average on D but yea hes a good matchup against undersized/quick 4s or tall 3s like rashard,boozer,hedo... and he can play SF too.

I like powe, diagou, warrick( warrick's ok but I think hes a bit overrated because he does the WOW/flashy things I rather have powe whos very hard working and does his things under the radar ) but I doubt they sign just for $1m+

shelden hmmm...hes ok, hes an above average/very strong defender like kwame. He can guard PFs and Cs. but we already have Mbenga who's very strong too and plays like kwame and hes a better shot blocker? and I think powell is better than him, but shelden is better defender and unlike josh he can guard Cs because hes strong.

I'm sorry One Love; shouldn't Odam have been signed days ago according to your "insider sources"? The 24 hour guarentee is long over.

We already lost out on the only replacement I wanted in Wilcox. At this point I would much rather go with Powell and sign a player like Sheldon Williams for 1 year to see if we get lucky. Joe Smith for 1 year is also acceptable if we don't resign Odom. The rest of the list is garbage and we should not bother. Bettter to go with 12 players to start the season and make an adjustment if and when we get our firast injury.
