From clublakers
July,26th ,Chengdu, the state capital of Sichuan where 12,000 people died
from the most davastaing earthquake in the past 50 years in china.
Bad weather, it was raining heavilly all day, Kobe just finished first 5th
stop in shanghai, supposed to arrive in Chengdu at 11:30am local time ,
his sechedule was to have a rest in htel,go to a nike ID store, meet his
fans at a local university stadiom and call it a day. The previous day ,
fans in shanghai were too crazy and some of them got themselves hurt,
nike had to change their original pln, went directly from airport to the
Nike store, what they didn’t expect the shopping plaza where the store
located were already packet by thousands of kobe fans in the heavy
rain. They didn’t have the ticket to go to the stadium to see kobe(only
1000 ticket were hand out by NIKE), All they want to do is to have a
chance to see kobe. Before kobe arrived, fans (not just local people. A
lot of them from other states of china by plane or by train for a one day
stay in Chengdu just want to see or feel kobe was so near to them) For
security reason, kobe was guided to that store through special tunnel,
only a handful of people saw kobe’s car, and kobe was not allowed to
come out to greet the fans in case fans got crazy in a bad weather day)
Kobe arrived at the hotel at 1pm local time, after one hour of media
session, ,kobe need to go to the university stadium to meet his fans.
What he didn’t know, maybe he will never know, thousand of fans who
can’t get the ticket gathered outside of the stadium in the rain to feel his presence.
They can only hear the loud cheers from the stadium to guess what were
happening inside, they constsntly chant ‘ kobe’,’MVP’ ,even couldn’t see
kobe in person, they were still so involved and happy. After the meet the
fan session, lots of them were running after the car they thought kobe
was in and crying and hope the time can freeze for eternity. Asked were
they disappoined going after kobe in the heavy rain all day without
actually seeing kobe in person. what they said really touched me, ‘ we
are happy and blessed kobe is so near to us, to see so many kobe fans
from the country to cheer for kobe made my day. This is trully a life time
experince money can never buy’
Now,just hope they didn’t catch cold when back home and have sweet
dream

All Westerners are rock stars in China. The first time I went walking in Beijing (near Forbidden City) I was stopped repeatedly so that locals could take a picture with me -- which included an entire class of students that were there on a field trip. It was crazy. Shanghai was a little different, but I still got a crazy amount of attention. Certainly nothing along the lines of the attention that Kobe gets though.
My point? I don't have one. Work is slow.

I would say it was a bit more modern, particularly the subway system which was impressive as hell when compared to NY or even Beijing.
Speaking of trains though -- have you ever ridden on the Maglev train (magnetic rail) that goes to the airport? That thing is insanely fast and surprisingly smooth. I believe we topped out at 450 km/h or something ridiculous like that.

Shanghai is a nice city, it's like the New York of 21 century.

acutally, your no rockstar in china, nobody will travel from state to state to take a picture of you. And honestly I have never seen any one stop to a take picture with westerners in China. Maybe 10 years ago, when they're wasn't any westerners. But recently with the Economy in china surpassing the United States by a long mile, theres many westerners in China looking for opportunity. So they'res plenty of americans and europeans.

i think most amreicans dont have an idea of how these NBa players are popular around the world, about 2 years ago the AND1 guys came to Brazil for the fisrt time and it was crazy, 2 days sold out, tv broadcast, and it was the AND1 guys!! imagine if a player like kobe lebron come here, it would something close to these chinese thing, the league its not so popular here but , every kid knows kobe, and lebron and tmost popular players
for an exemple, in your football, Tom Brady could come to brazil with his wife gisele, and nobody could even care about Tom Brady, but the NBA players are very popular around the world, instead of other american sports...

I was born and raised in Taiwan, and I've got to say after MJ and probably Yao, Kobe is the next most known basketball player. As for Yao Ming, no one really likes him lol

kobe is revered for his legendary hard work ethics and dedication to his art
those of asian lineage would confirm to you that their parents wouldve raised them on the virtues of hard work.
that regardless of talent or physical limitations, if you put your mind to what you want to achieve, you can achieve anything... that the sky is the limit
most chinese can't relate to yao ming, simply because of his height despite being the foremost chinese basketball star in the world
the majority of realgm that were wondering why kobe is much much much more popular than lebron in beijing, is because even though we all know lebron can do so many more things kobe can with just his athleticism, kobe has managed to elevate himself to the top of the NBA through consistent hard work, dedication and unrivalled mental focus and preparation
and that is why the chinese treats kobe like a rock-star/idol/god

Is it because Kobe's eyes look a little Asian...
they have a little slant???

^^ hahaha. that's the first time i've read a comment about Kobe's eyes being slanted. I always thought his eyes were sharp-ish too. Being asian myself, I always felt that played a lil' part in Kobe's mega popularity in Asia. lol But as Akiho said, it's the asian beliefs and values that makes him endearing --> work hard, focus and anything is truly possible.

It has more to do with Kobe being the closest thing to MJ I think. Hard work and dedication is appreciated everywhere, but being that Jordan is extremely popular in China and Kobe is practically a clone of him makes him far more likable to the Chinese. I say this having met several of my ex-girlfriend's friends boyfriends (lol) who had Jordan (and a little bit of Kobe) plastered all over their dorm rooms.
Also, does anyone remember Nike's "Chamber of Fear" ad that was banned in China several years ago? The one where LeBron is defeating a Kung Fu Master or something to that effect? Yeah, that doesn't help his cause at all. On that note, it really does blow me away how little the West seems to respect the East when it comes to culture and customs. It's downright embarrassing.
