Rambis: I see Phil coaching for 5 or 6 more years

"There's no doubt he could coach beyond this season," Rambis said. "I don't think it has anything to do with his competitive desire or his willingness to coach. There might be some health issues that creep up that prevent him from doing it, but otherwise I see him fully capable of coaching for another five or six years."

This is perfectly fine with me. Kobe said in an interview this summer he has about 6 or 7 seasons left in him. 2009-2010 will be Kobe's 14th NBA season. Considering Shaq will be playing in his 18th NBA season and Jason Kidd in his 16th NBA season (with both looking forward to playing several more seasons more), Kobe with his conditioning could hit the elusive 20 NBA seasons that few have managed to reach.

If Phil could daresay coach the Lakers to the next 3-4 NBA Finals with say at least two more championships, it would be a fine era for Lakers fans to watch the final 5 or so years of the present world's greatest basketball player Kobe playing under the world's greatest basketball coach Phil (screw you Red, 10 > 9).

That's good to hear...

I don't think he lasts that long though. I just have a feeling that he coaches until we have a dissappointing season and calls it quits. As long as we're in the championship, I think he stays but if we have a rash of injuries and miss the playoffs or get bounced early even, I just don't see him toughing it out...

I wouldn't want to bet on anything over 2 seasons including this one...

My money is still on one and done unless we set the wins record.

Phil will coach as long as his health stays and as long as Kobe stays. He enjoys the journey and the bond he's built with Kobe as a player. Setting the wins record would have no bearing what so ever on his decision to stay or leave. When was the last time a championship caliber coach cared about regular season wins passed having home court?

Listen to the man who's career depended on it, if he(Rambis) chose a head coaching job with another team instead of waiting for Phil to leave and take his spot that should tell you everything you need to know. Rambis would know a bit more about Phil's future then any of us considering the amount of years he's spent with Phil.

i wish he could coach for 5-6 years more

But I feel this man has put in so much work that he needs a break

a long break

if Lakers are even fortunate to make the Finals next year, I think he should retire. No more than 1-2 years after that

I think the only reason Rambis is saying that is because it was clear that he wasn't going to be the head coach as long as Kobe was playing here... It has nothing to do with Phil...

Kobe likes Rambis but he'd never accept him as a coach unless they never lost another game.

Kurt was just trying to spin the reason for his leaving...

Maybe that's why rambis signed a 4 year deal, so he could join the lakers back right after that ;) just kidding

His health has deteriorated more in 1 season than I've seen him all through is career and he's been grumpy and complaining about long road trips all through the last couple of seasons. Keeping these in mind I'd be surprised if he stays beyond 2011.

Well he said he was so bored the years he wasn't coaching he was swimming with Luc Longley.

I personally have been back and fourth with this but Im thinking it depends on the team. As is the team will be a super powerhouse for at least 3-4 more years so my guess is he coaches for 4 more years.

If Bynum lives up to expections and they add another stud who knows. There are older coaches them him out there.

I used to not worry about it and kind of looked forward to having a real pg in the back of my mind but with Artest there I think it is very important Jackson stays for at least 2-3 years. I will be happy with that.
