Tony Gaffney. Will he make the Lakers. 3rd in the nation in block shots. At 6'8, that seems to be pretty good. Not sure where he would play. I think he will be in the league somewhere.

Re: Tony Gaffney
im up for signing him just so he brings it and pushes the other players physically at practice just like DJ does
and if we can work on his jumpshot, he might turn into another ariza, he looks able to compete defensively with just his athleticism

I like Thomas Kelati better than Tony.. We need good outside shooters.. and Thomas has a good chance of becoming that..

Re: Tony Gaffney
I have been impressed with Gaffney in the preseason. He won't make the team though. I am pretty sure Joel said during last nights game that the Lakers are only going to carry 13 players and the Gaffney and Kelati will be released this week. Too bad Morrison has a $5 million expiring because I think Gaffney is a better player.

Re: Tony Gaffney
Why would we carry 13? For flexibility? Seems to me that Gaffney plays the same position as Luke "I'm always hurt like my dad" Walton, so it might come in handy.

I'd take Kelati over Gaffney.
Gaffney is scrappy and might dive at every loose ball. He likes to play closer to the rim (defending 3's and/or 4's). Artest fills that role(and Odom)
But Kelati is a more controlled perimeter defender (2's and/or bigger 1's), and has the outside shot as good as anybody not named Kobe on that team. Yah... Kobe fills that PD role. But I think PJ wants Kobe to roam and facilitate communication. so Kelati sorta does what Kobe does, but without the roaming.
Gaffney is not what the team needs right now. Some other team could use him better. Kelati is a mature & controlled version of Sasha. That is what we need right now.

Expect he won't make the team either.

Wow, I gotta pay more attention to TK. You guys are so high on him and I haven't noticed any of what you are saying about him (admittedly, I haven't been watching the pre-season games very closely after the first quarter).

fareweather you are not the only one, but I have watched all the games. Kelati although successful in Europe has such terrible handles for a guard, yesterday in his limited play it took him forever on a couple possessions to grab the ball get around a defender and push the ball up the court. He is good at his face up game, but with limited minutes hard for him to be effective. Probably why he is going to get cut.
Gaffney on the other hand u can see his impact on the court, he might not do much but you see him all over the court. He makes really good cuts around the basket and finishes well too. Hustles for boards has a decent midrange game. I like Gaffney he is a type of player that won't win you games, but he will bust his ass when he is playing and give some rest to who he subs in for.

I agree with you on Kelati's "ball handling limitations. But check this out: anybody that is diving all over the place and jumping up and down will always get more notice. You will feel like he has more impact etc. But you are right. He is the type of player that won't win you games. See...you are still pointing out things that this particular ball club DOES NOT NEED. We have DJ and co to do all that scrappy stuff (plus Artest).
F the handling. The tri is not a ball-handler's type of offense. its a passing offense. What we need is a Raja Bell type of player (that Luke can't be) and i think Kelati fits that role better. He might not jump etc, and he might not have sick handles, but he stays steady in front of his man. The man in front of him is likely to pass off the ball every time. He's not like Sasha that overplays every gat damn time. we need this at the 2 spot.
For this team right now, I'd take a severely poor man's shorter Shane Battier any day over a severely poor man's Shawn Marion.
Steady does it bro... steady does it.

I guess we will never find out Frantik. Lakers waived Kelati and Gaffney is probably next.

I understand and agree with the point you made tho.

Would be nice to see both playing more just to get a final and real answer. Guess that is what practice is for.

Re: Tony Gaffney
Sup Fellas,
From what i've seen sa far, based on the pre-season games, Gaffney is a poor man's AK47. He can block shots, rebound and do all the dirty work. Just doesn't have that range like AK47 has.
I think from a defensive perspective, the Lakers should keep Tony Gaffney over Kelati. Defensively also, this Gaffney dude is much better than Coby Karl or Sun Yue or any other 12th man we've had in the past 2-3 years.
I'm saying that Gaff can get more playing time being the 8th or 9th man guarding and putting constant pressure on players like 'Bron, 'Melo and all those 6'8" - 6'9" - 6'10" SF while Artest is on the bench.
You can't teach hustle and athleticism.
