As much as I like Gaffney's hustle and upside I'd much prefer a veteran player who can manage things on the floor with a cool head.

I'd prefer a veteran. Phil doesn't play rooks.

there was a reason why gaffney "impressed" during summer league and training camp and why he was the last one to get cut...
phil will play him because he defends and hustles, much like ariza
and we all knew how bad ariza's shot was when he arrived

The difference is Ariza's been in the league for like 3 seasons prior to that but Gaffney will have a hard time as is making the transition from the college game to the NBA. There's absolutely no chance he's going to play minutes even when Luke is out.

then why is there even talk of signing gaffney if theres absolutely no chance hes going to play minutes even if luke is out?
u dont sign players as trophies... and as far as trophies go, gaffney aint very shiny
lakers were impressed with gaffney, gaffney's getting a call, he might not play straight away, but given two weeks, hed be shoved in by PJ for sh*ts and giggles just to see what he can do...
we all know the lakers need more heart

Phil doesn't play rookies.
I am so tired of hearing that, man. It's easy. PJ doesn't "play" rookies, because the guy has 10 rings and veterans are usually on championship teams.
He played the best, most trusted guys for the jobs.
IIRC Jordan Farmar started all 5 of the playoff games his rookie season.
So, if they do make to sign Tony and our bench is playing weak, jacking up shots, not hustling, then I wouldn't be surprised to see him get minutes.

The other option was Smush Parker who would not even get into team huddles.
Like I've maintained rookies have a tough time adjusting to the NBA rules from the college game and it'd be terribly irritating to see Gaffney get a 3 sec in the lane call in the middle of a close game at the end of 3rd or 4th Q.
We need vets who can get the job done without panicking when the starters are resting.

I don't think we're talking about a big game, last second substitution as much as someone to add hustle, set screens, play earnest defense and give us a spark for minutes at a time.
Morrison isn't going to add all of those qualities, especially consistently.

This guy won't break a sweat on the hardwood before Luke comes back. We have a good 6 or 7 guys who can fill any "void" Luke apparently leaves that Odom won't be expected to take care of.

oooh, good point...
i wonder whether lamar hasnt just simply accepted hes a PF and packed it in regarding playing the 3...
we might get a look at the mythical bynum/gasol/odom frontcourt, or even better, a bynum/gasol/artest/kobe/odom lineup with LO at the 1

Dump Morrison and Walton for Curry, then trade Farmar for Mardy Collins (and/or sign Gaffney) and sign Quincy Douby for 800 grand, win another ring, in the summer resign Fisher for the minimum, sign or trade for Ike Diogu and Mardy Collins (both minimum contracts), trade Bynum and Vujacic for LeBron, watch the greatest dynasty in all of sports:
PG - Fisher - Douby
SG - Artest - Brown
C - Gasol - Diogu - Curry
PF - James - Odom
SF - Bryant - Collins - Gaffney

We need Odom on the bench right now. Phil just trusts Odom to handle the ball and set up the offense, if need be. I saw a lot of that in the first couple of games. Fish would be there, yet they would frequently give the ball to LO to set up. Fish and Kobe would reset if the play didn't work.
Walton is pretty much useless. Just a $5m name to me. Good passer though. Odom can do everything Luke can do and if Shannon Brown really wants Fish/Farmar's spot, now will be his chance to step up. So Gaffney's "impact" won't really exist this year. Garbage minutes guy in a position we're stacked in. Morrison probably gets minutes over him.

I don't really believe in the whole 'NBA Conspiracy' thing that goes on here sometimes... But I swear to the Basketball Gods... There is no way the league lets Kobe, Lebron, Gasol, and Artest all on the same team... With Odom off the Bench?...
I swear, every team in the league would work together to make sure that didn't happen....
I honestly don't think that starting lineup would loose a game... Without even breaking a sweat... For one season... Then Stearn would dispand a bunch of teams and make sure there was an adequate answer... Plus James Kobe and Gasol would never get a foul called their way. They'd foul out in the third quarter every night... But with a 40pt lead, that'd be OK...
