Maybe Kobe is kinda like Mike

Interesting article about how Kobe is narrowing the gap between himself and Jordan.

I guess I can say he is getting there. But more rings would help his case. One thing Kobe does have is starting in the NBA earlier than Jordan and the ability to play longer than Jordan since Jordan retired... one... two... three times in his career. Would be interesting to see once Kobe finishes his career.

Years ago, when Jordan was going for his 6 championship, people were saying we would never see anyone close to what Jordan has done. And then a young Kobe came into the league and y heard the comparisons then.

Today, you see AI in his decline and then I'm watching Brandon Jennings play. It's scary how much I see a bit of AI in Jennings.

I don't think Jennings has the attitude of AI, but their game and they look similar. Scary thing is Kobe is IMPROVING his game at his point in his career although his athleticism is declining a bit. I pray for another 3peat for Kobe.

Kobe will finish with eight rings.

If the Lakers STEAL Lebron James this summer (for Bynum and Vujacic), Kobe will finish with ten, possibly eleven rings.

Word to the league:

Some other team had better step up and put together a team that give this team some actual resistance over the next six years or the Lakers will pillage -- the Magic can't do it, the Celtics can beat the Lakers but only for the next two years, if that. It has to be a team, like Boston, with multiple All-Stars (again, I don't see the Magic as candidates unless Dwight Howard gets Olujawon/Ewing better.

Where do these KB,MJ comparisons come from? Mike went to the finals winning all six times, and winning the finals MVP everytime. Kobe has lost twice in the finals. KB doesn't have the first 3 without Shaq. Shaq was the best players on those teams. He was averaging over 40 a game in the finals or close to it several years. MJ was always the best player on his team. I don't see the comparison at all. It's russell, magic,mj,bird and then everyone else.

LOL...how does Kareem or Wilt become an outcast from that group?

At any rate, Kobe's had a great, great career, one that is still unfolding. It's an absolutely massive achievement that he's forced a comparison. But even if he did somehow manage to surpass Jordan's ring totals, I would never put him ahead. I've seen both in their prime, and Jordan was simply the better player.

what many people need to understand when it comes to the old kobe V Jordan comparison is that you can't compare them on a one on one basis. not because Mike was better (not that I am saying that he wasn't), but because of the different situations they played under.

would Kobe statistics be closer to Mikes if he went to college and comes to a team in the NBA without a prime Shaq quality player? Would Jordan be the Same player if he came to the league at 17 years old and be a second fiddle to a prime Shaq for the first 7 years of his carreer? t

hen you have all the rule changes in the NBA. for example: would Kobe be a better defender without the hand check rule, would Mikes defense be hindered by it?

there are way to many variables to make a one on one comparison so it is not fair to penalize Kobe because he played with Shaq (although I personally don't think that Shaq would had been as dominant in the finals against East coast weaklings without Kobe dominating the tough West playoffs).

the route i like to take when it comes to Kobe V Jordan is that they are both great players.
one is retired and the other still hasn't even reached the age of when the other started to win his last set of championships and will not for another 2 and half years.

in the end Jordan will have the better statistics just like Lebron will pass Kobe because of their unique situations, but Kobe will always be in the thick of that argument because he has been since 1996 and because he is worthy of being in that argument.

The question is can Kobe win 3 championships after he is 33 like Mike??? That would make Kobe the best ever (especially if he wins another before he is 33!!!

Kobe is the best player in the league right now, period.
After MJ (98) for years was Shaq and Duncan and now is Kobe. But better than MJ ? Nope. He would have to win 5 more rings with 5 more finals mvps , a defensive player of the year and 3 or 4 more regular seasons mvps. Only them people would recognize that HE won 6 rings. Right now Shaq won 3 rings and Kobe 1. Thtas the way it is, if you are a Lakers fan or a Kobe lover, maybe you think diferent, but at the end of the day , when you say that Jordan won 6 rings , you dont just put him at the same level of importance as Pippen. Its easier to remember Clyde Drexler for his Olimpic Games in 92 and the guy that lost in the finals to the Bulls x the Clyde Drexler that won a chip with the Rockets. That was Olajuwon team.

Michael Jordan was what would happen if you combine Kobe and Lebron. Kobe will never be considered greater than Jordan, barring a wrath of terror the likes of which this league has never seen for the next 6 years. But he's about as close as you'll ever see.

Bryant's been the best player in the league for the last five seasons. I suggest you crawl forward from under the rock.

If Kobe gets 2+ more rings, i'll put him ahead of Jordan..yea i said it.

Although, I'd put it like this: Magic/Bird ruled the 80s, Jordan/ ruled the 90s, Kobe/ ruled the 00s.

I believe in GOAT player in every decade, not just one greatest in the whole history. Just too many greats.

IMO, It'll take more then a superior ring total for KB to "surpass" Jordan, as the GOAT.

In between now and that proverbial end of the tunnel, and amongst this assassin-like scoring and top tier defense he is capable of exemplifying, he needs to transcend his own greatness and leave his OWN mark like MJ did.

Not just championships, but the impact that player had on the sport and the legacy they leave behind; then comes the accomplishments, accolades, individual success etc.

Kobe has to do something quintessentially that the NBA and its fans will look back and say, if there will never be another MJ, there will DEFINITELY not be another KOBE.

What I do know is, the journey has been great thus far and I have a feeling we've still yet to see the best of it.

So if they had equal ring totals you would put him ahead of jordan?

I think he was using a play on words in that the 00's are ahead of the 90's so in that sense Kobe is ahead or after Jordan. Since he categorizes players by decade rather than proclaiming a singular GOAT he essentially has many different GOATS and Kobe being the last is ahead of Jordan. When you really think about it the past is gone and the only thing that really matters is the now.
