The reason Phil won't bench Fisher

I thought it was just obliviousness.

Turns out its just outright delusion.

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jan/09 ... -2010jan09

In one breath, Jackson acknowledged the defensive shortcomings of the 14-year veteran. In the other breath, he stuck up for Fisher's steady hand on the court.

"We function so much better with Derek on the floor as an offensive team that it's very important for him to be out there," Jackson said Friday. "He has all the knowledge that's necessary for a lead guard. He knows how to keep our guys in what we want to get done out there on the floor. It's very important, and we actually talked a little bit [Thursday] about that, in supporting him in situations where defensively he may be playing back-to-back games or may be overmatched in a certain situation."

I like how he is as vague and abstract as humanly possible when describing what Fish brings to the team when on the floor. He could have described the Loch Ness monster with more detail.

Phil is full of ****.

Last year Rambis talked about this in an article, which I can't find for the life of me, and came right out and stated that they didn't think Fisher would be able to handle a demotion hence the reason he was still starting and getting the bulk of the minutes. Fscking brilliant.

Oh, and overmatched in certain situations? Fisher is overmatched in EVERY situation against EVERY team. GTFO with that, Phil.

BTW, if this article isn't discouraging as hell then I don't know what is. Fisher is clearly here to stay and will be starting as long as he thinks he can play, which in his own delusional brain is several more years. He's going to cost us titles, that's what he's going to do. Our competition is too damn good to leave room for error, and he is a huge ass error waiting to happen. Every single team that we will be directly contending with has a top notch PG waiting to rip us a new one.

Come on guys, fisher is old okaaaaaay, he is overmached in every game true, however, in critical situation the old dude comes through lets give him that [ SPURS VS. LAKERS] .4 seconds game wining shot + NBA finals with magic 2 important shots

So lets cut him some slack keep him around for those critical situation, i dont think he single handedly lost us a game in the playoffs.

Do i wish for an upgrade in the PG position - YES but fish isn't THAAAAT bad i get a sense from you that he is worse than smush

Right lets give him credit for the ish he did years ago. Sounds great to me.

The guy is old and he cant keep up with the current young p/g if his life depended on it. Give it a break. We need to bench him and give his valuable minutes to someone who can produce. Like I said before for every good thing Fish has done for this team he has done ten times worst things to cost us games. But hey he hit a game winner ten years ago so he's good in my book.

I would hope he can accept his lack of D and move gracefully to the bench at seasons end. Right now, he's gonna hurt us a bit, and we're going to have to hope that he's money in the clutch when we need hm a reward for not putting him out to pasture this year. Phil's a stubborn old man, and I'm sure he's thinking chemistry and there is some truth the leadership aspect.

I don't care if he starts. I only care that the BEST guy who is most effective gets the MOST minutes.

Tony, Bro i understand from where your coming ... its true he is getting older and eventually the team has to pull the plug sooner rather than later. At least have him come of the bench. Furthermore, the guy hit big shots in last year's finals so that's not that ancient.

Plus we got amazing starters Bynum, Pau, Kobe, Ron and lamar coming off the bench they should offset his deficiencies. Imagine a war, a general doesn't go in the field but directs the battle i think phil sees it that way ... Fish might not fill in the stats but he has everyone focused during the game in trying to execute the offensive and defensive plays. There is a need for his leadership on the floor in addition to Kobe's.

BTW, i hate it when he drives to the basket my old man who never bounced a ball can do it better.

But yeah i cant deny the fact he is getting older and less efficient and the team needs to down play his role to only dribbling, leading, hitting ONLY corner open shots.

The sad thing is, we don't have a better option. Put Farmar in, and we might actually get worse defensively, while getting no significant improvement on offense -- certainly not from a systematic standpoint, of which I think there is at least some value.

With Farmar, it's like a pickup game, taking whatever shot he feels like without any semblance of floor leadership. Fish's decision-making is certainly questionable -- I'll bet he leads the league in 1 on 3 layup attempts -- whereas Farmar's is flat-out poor most of the time. I guess Shannon could be an option, but he's another poor shooter/weak defender who makes cringe-worthy decisions.

So as much as I'd like to see Fish benched, I don't see who takes his spot now that the trading deadline has passed.

Farmar is absolutely an improvement over Fisher, on both offense and defense. The pickup game analogy you just described, about taking whatever shot he feels like without floor leading, that applies just as well to Fisher but without half the talent of Jordan.

Lets please put an end to the myth that Fisher is good decision-maker and plays within the confines of himself and the offense. That myth has to end.

It's probably safe to say that Fish may have the worst makes to layups attempted average in the history of the NBA. Honestly, I can't think of another player who's put up that many failed attempts over the years, he give me nightmares from closer than 10ft.

Farmar is light years ahead of Fisher on defense and there are literally fifty PGs I'd pick ahead of Farmar. I don't know how you can possibly say Fisher is better. There's no statistical proof of this whatsoever. The worst I've ever seen Farmar abused happens every night against Fisher. I can without a shadow of a doubt if Fisher played game 3 against the Rockets we may not have won a ring.

Seriously, c'mon now, just one more season of Fisher left.

Like they say, your gonna appreciate someone even more when their gone.

when kobe was playing, it was becoming more and more common to see farmar and/or brown out there deep into the 4th instead of fisher, so there were some encouraging signs.

I know Fish shot was bunk, but Jackson said the play was spouse to go inside to Pau. Why did Ron pass the pass to Fish? Perhaps Ron spilled milk?

I think Fisher will be back next season if Phil Jackson is still coaching. If Phil is back theres a good chance that Fisher will still be starting. Phil has got to be the most stubborn individual I have ever seen.

Whats really F****ed up is this guy wont even get hurt so he has to sit on the bench for a few months. Dammmmmmmm now Im hoping the dude breaks a leg or something so he can be forced to retire or sit on the bench and even then Phil would probably put him in with crutches and a cast.
