Caron Butler credits Kobe for his success in the league.

Caron Butler spent a year in Los Angeles as Kobe Bryant's Laker teammate thanks to the Shaquille O'Neal trade that sent the big fella to Miami.

"I say that's the best thing that ever could have happened for me personally for my career," Butler said. "To play alongside a guy like that, see his preparation, see what it takes to get to that level, that's why I was able to be so good in Washington because I took everything I learned from him under his wing."

Butler played in 77 games in 2004-05 with the Lakers. He averaged a then career-high (by a tick) 15.5 points and then career-high 5.8 rebounds. His free throw shooting improved, too.

"Work ethic," Butler said. "He comes to the gym 6:30, 7 in the morning, gets shots every day, a rhythm. Afterward hits the weight room, works out in the summer, studying film, critiquing guys, watching their tendencies, picking things up ... Just studying the game with him taught me a lot."

Butler and Bryant talk every couple of weeks and when Butler was traded to Dallas Bryant was quick with a call.

"He told me he was happy for me and happy to see me in a situation to be able to legitimately compete for a title," Butler said.

But Wednesday will be a different conversation.

"You always hear that he's ready to compete," Butler said. "He's happy but at the same time once we get on the court all bets are off with Kobe. He's going to bring it, then hug me afterwards. That's how it is. It's business."

Yes, he is so missed. He just came at a time when the Lakers were not all in the same place. He should have been here for years. He was a perfect player to play along side Kobe. He would not have the stats he does with Kobe on the same team. He would have won more games. That was one of the hardest trades to accept and fans were not happy. You have to give to get players in return.

Caron is the kind of guy that could put up better numbers playing alongside Kobe & Gasol. Treat him like Ariza, with a much better skillset.

So Washington had character problems w/ Arenas and Critt so they traded their character guys and the only 4 things the franchise had going for them in Butler, Heywood, Jamison and Stevenson.

If the Wiz would have gutted the team but kept those guys they would haver rebuilt faster then the Lakers after Shaq.

What is wrong w/ Washington's decision making?

i have always said that if a player can't learn anything watching kobe than that player is stupid. sometimes it has nothing to do with being vocal. if you can't learn how to be better just by watching him then you are only short changing yourself.

I completely disagree.

Washinglton came out the best at the trade deadline. Better than Cleveland, Dallas, everybody else.

I love it when teams don't overvalue their own guys. Washington has had chemistry issues for a long time because they were "stuck" on that whole big three idea.

None of Arenas, Butler, or Jamison had guys around them that comlimented their games. The team was not put together well. Washington knew this and cut their losses, saving many million dollars.

After all the dust settled they see now that they had LEGITIMATE, young NBA talent on the roster that would never get real opportunities because of the big three in front of them.

I expect Nick Young to get his time to shine now that Josh Howard is done for the year.

Next year Arenas will be able to literall "run wild" while Blatche, Thornton, and Young become 2nd, 3rd and 4th options respectively.

If Arenas becomes tradeable again, Washington will EASILY have the lowest payroll next year. Having a low payroll with some young talent on the team is the way to go in today's NBA. If Blatche wants to get his 10 mill a year after his contract year next year I give him his walking papers too.
