The Logo pwned Calipari

Post#1 » by Sofa King » Wed Feb 24, 2010 1:39 pm

First West had to take the huge gamble of trading veteran center Vlade Divac to the Charlotte Hornets for their thirteenth pick in the draft. Then he learned that John Calipari, the coach of the New Jersey Nets, planned to take [Kobe] Bryant with the eighth pick before the Lakers could snare him at thirteen.

“Jerry wanted Kobe, so he basically called up and talked Cal out of drafting Kobe,” explained Hal Wiseel, who was with the Nets at the time. West encouraged the Bryant family to talk to Calipari and explain that their son really wanted to play for the Lakers. “He knew if we didn’t take him at eight, he’d drop to Charlotte, and he could make the deal with Charlotte,” Wissel recalled. “Cal was young in the league and, hey, it’s Jerry West on the phone.”

Jerry West is very, very smart, and intelligent man. I'm very happy that he's a Laker for life ;)

West won a ring as a player

then built 2 dynasty teams

then hand trained the GM who traded Gasol to us.

Mr Clutch!!! The Logo. The longest successful career of all time.

Kind of hard to believe IMO.

It's hard to imagine that if Calipari REALLY wanted Kobe he would not have just went ahead and drafted him, regardless of West and the Bryant family.

If anything, just knowing who West wants would make most GMs want that guy even more.

I believe that when it came down to it, Calipari wanted the immeadiate help that Kerry Kittles would've provided as opposed to taking on a project in Kobe Bryant.

I really don't think West's manipulation had much to do with it at all. Or maybe Calipari felt like West was trying bamboozle him. Maybe he thought that West really had no interest in Kobe and West was simply trying to get in Calipari's head. Hell Calipari could've thought that that the Lakers really wanted Kittles.

roland lazenby is a very credible source. awesome details.

and look at memphis, people thought that we were giving them the shaft with that trade. but they got a very very solid bigman in the middle in marc gasol, and took a big chunk off of their books with kwames contract. and earlier signed an premiere athlete in rudy gay. they have a very solid core of youth to build around, just keep 'em together.

"some" say, jerrys "influence" in assisting both sides in the deal was very real. so these type of backroom deals that occur with jerry west doesnt surprise me, it only surprises me that he would be the only one to pull 'em off.

ok, and so? I don't know who Brian Carmel is, nor do I care. Can you give me a valid reason why I should care?
