Report: Penguins, Capitals to play in 2011 Winter Classic

The National Hockey League is planning to put its premier rivalry on display at the annual Winter Classic outdoor game next season according to a report.

Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins will host Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on New Year’s Day in 2011 at Heinz Field, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Sunday.

The Penguins participated in the outdoor game in 2008 when they played the Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium, while the Capitals have long been rumoured to be one of the teams the NHL wants in its marquee regular-season match.

If the league gives Heinz Field — home of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers — the green light, it will end a two-year run where the game was played at a baseball park. This season the Boston Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park. Before that, the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings met at Wrigley Field.

Why not play it at FedEx Field? And don't the Steelers expect to make the playoffs this season? There could be a conflict.

Not a bad choice of games, but i agree with WEFFPIM that Pittsburgh playing it again is disappointing.

Not a fan of this. Would prefer the Pens to get the All-Star Game. Pittsburgh weather is also very unpredictable during this time of year so who knows what the conditions will be like. I see why the Pens are already in it. Ratings. But frankly, I wish the NHL would tell NBC to go suck on it and put some Canadian teams in it.
