Does BASKETBALL take skill?

Post#1 » by CJ_18 » Thu Dec 6, 2007 5:11 pm

Ok, so i'm in my business class, and one of class mates thinks that Basketball does NOT take skill. He thinks that theres no skill, all you have to do is tell a person to throw the ball through the hoop. He thinks all the movemens/actions in basketball are 'natural gifts' (ie. jump, run, throw a ball, dribble, grabbing the ball)

He thinks that skating and other stuff is skills you aquire. I agree, but i disagree in the 'basketball takes no skill' part.

I AM POSTING THIS IN THE NHL FORUM B/C YOU GUYS ARE NOT PREJUDICE TO BASKETBALL...if i posted this in the general NBA i would get all Yes.

So, what do you think?

Hockey is harder to play but basketball anyone can play but it takes time to be decent.

For basketball good instincts a good pair of hands and time for practice will make you good.

For hockey, it takes a bit to learn to skate. Then raise the puck. And it takes a little to raise a slapper too.

Basketball takes skill. I've seen enough people who have none to know this. Practice alone does not automatically make someone good at the sport.

Of course, hockey is the much more difficult sport, if only for the skating. But that's just lip service.

Basketball is easier to learn but harder for someone to be very good.

Soccer is the easiest sport to play. Hockey is by far the hardest sport to play. Basketball you have to be tall but you still need skill.

I gotta say, Basktball is the only sport where your size makes such a huge difference. If you are 7 foot tall you are going to be a decent b-ball player. Not so for other sports.

I echo the other posts thoughts.

To be honest, some 7 footers, or taller people are sooo uncoordinated. I've had to guard a couple 7 footers in my life throughout college (I'm 6'6) and some of them were good and some... were just tall. The uncoordinated ones really dont do much for ya, they just stand under the bucket and try to block ya or rebound, but their timing and such is off so they are rendered pretty much useless. Anyways, just my 2 cents lol.

Soccer is the easiest sport to play, but once again to be really good it takes a lot of hard work. You have to be a fantastic runner, which is most important. Basketball is easy to learn, but it does take a lot of skill. One thing that IMO distinguishes basketball is lateral quickness. On defense you have to have extremely quick feet while still keeping your arms in position to make a play. Hockey involves the most skill of all, because it involves skating, which is totally different entity on its own :). You have to be able to combine your core skills with your skating skills to be a good hockey player.
