Yeah, if hockey fans have learned anything it's to not doubt the Red Wings franchise, arguably the smartest in sports. May not seem like there's room for Modano right now, but they clearly have a plan for him and it will probably work.

Yeah i probably sounded too down on the deal. Its one year and he is, apparently, going to center the third line with Cleary and Hudler. That should make for a very nice line indeed. I love his leadership and you know the Wings always love their veterans.
The move also means that Ritola and Maltby are almost assuredly gone, which is fine i guess. I guess Drew Miller will be sitting more this year, and injuries will always occur, but it should be interesting to watch the line juggling.
But there is no downside to this move, with some nice upside. Im feeling better about it

I love it for Detroit, there's no real downfall to having a guy like Modano on your roster because he's nowhere close to being a liability.

Re: The Official: 2010 Offseason Thread
Mike Modano was brought into be a 3rd line C who can be a great depth player for us and mentor as well for our younger guys. He's still a crafty guy who can come in and play good two way hockey plus is a hometown guy on a cheap 1 year deal. If Modano goes down we have the depth to replace him it's not like were hurting for talent.
I expect make 15 goals from him and 30-40ish assists and I would be thrilled with that.

And the NHL gives a big FU to Kovalchuk, I love it. If Ilya was smart (he isn't), he would take less money and a smaller contract to go play in Tampa, and then they can package Malone with some picks for Kaberle.
Kovalchuk, Lecavalier, St Louis, Gagne, Stamkos, Hedman, Kaberle, Kubina, Ohlund
That's one helluva team, and I'm pretty sure Yzerman would be able to pull it off.

I can still see a case where New Jersey and the NHL set this up, to set an example to stop 'these' types of contracts before the next CBA agreement. Who knows.
That team is ridiculous though shoon and any package involving Malone would be done very quick.

Will this finally be the opportunity for the Kings to pull their head out of their ass?

Re: The Official: 2010 Offseason Thread
Ouu, NHL might be looking into voiding Luongo's deal too, seeing as it only kicks in this year.
And with the way Vancouver fans treated Luongo in the last game of the playoffs, I could actually see him giving them a big FU and leaving to go somewhere else that can offer cash and years (Nashville, Atlanta, or even back to Florida).

Why does everyone (media and posters) keep mentioning the Ovechkin and Dipietro deals? Although they are long in length, there is nothing to investigate here. Both contracts pay 9 and 4.5 million each year respectively through the length of their deals, with OV's deal going UP at the end to 10. There is no circumvention here. The duration of their contracts doesn't take them into their 40s. They are long contracts, but by no means ridiculous or cheating in any way.

Why would you list Nashville? They already have Rinne, they're not going to go spend a ton of money on a goalie when they have much bigger needs than a goalie.

I'd take Luongo over Rinne, easily.

That's fine, but Nashville has much bigger needs than goalie and it's not like Rinne sucks.

I was going to say this, but I didn't want to be called a homer and get into a big argument about it so I decided against it.

So, Canadian friends, inform us on Kaberle.

He's a Leaf, so he sucks...
Honestly, he's a good puck moving dman, if unspectacular defensively. A good powerplay catalyst.

A source tells me Tampa Bay is making the very strong push to acquire Tomas Kaberle from Toronto..offering up Malone as the main piece
Wtf shoon, lol.

Re: The Official: 2010 Offseason Thread
Honestly, Burke is a ****ing (Please Use More Appropriate Word). He lands an overpaid, overrated defenseman in Phaneuf, then makes him captain. Because of this, he decides he wants to shop Kaberle, who is their best defenseman by miles and miles and the one who SHOULD be their captain. He has a contract that is highway robbery in comparison to the way he plays and the stats he puts up, and he wants to be in Toronto. Probably would've taken another pay cut to stay in Toronto and see them finally win some games and be a part of it, too.
What does Burke do? Drag his best player through the mud, plays his media and fans for idiots and in the process pisses off Kaberle and his agent. Now he runs the chance of Kaberle being pissed off and not waiving his NTC regardless of the situation and leaving Toronto for nothing at the end of the season.
There were a ton of rumored deals that were reported (Malone, Setoguchi, Turris & Upshall, Ribiero & Benn) and Burke turned them all down. If any of those deals end up being legit offers, then Burke is a fricken moron for not pulling the trigger on it because all of them would've helped his team. I'm not convinced that Burke is a top GM at all - his team in Anaheim was essentially already built by the time he got there and he hasn't done anything to prove otherwise in Toronto. I could care less because I hate the Leafs, but what an idiot. Not to mention they're going to be just as awful this year and they're not going to have a pick to make up for it.

Re: The Official: 2010 Offseason Thread
Again I posted this in the other thread, but I have no idea what sources reported THOSE deals, because they're clearly not true. The Upshall+Turris one was admitted to have been made up.
Trading for Phaneuf, making him captain were solid decisions. I don't even see how you can question his logic picking up a defenseman like that for our scraps. Phaneuf has shown great initiative and leadership with the young team so far, so at 25, why not commit to him as the captain and face of the franchise moving forward?
If Kaberle re-signs then we won as far as I'm concerned. I'm disgruntled with Burke running his mouth too much, but we knew that a long time ago. The offense hasn't improved much which is also a major concern, but I want to see the product on the ice this season before saying much else. It'll be interesting to see how the Kaberle situation plays out, but I'm confident it will end with him signing with the Leafs.
