Phaneuf has shown great initiative and leadership with the young team so far, so at 25, why not commit to him as the captain and face of the franchise moving forward?

Because the scraps you traded (including a guy who had a better season than Phaneuf, Ian White) landed you a horrible contract in an era where salary cap is everything, and then they crowned the same guy captain after years of people saying everyone in Calgary hated him, that he was immature, and that he only caused problems.

^There's no point even arguing with a Habs fan. I remember pulling up a post the last time this argument was made, with you claiming the Leafs must've given up Kadri or Kessel when the deal was first speculated to have been made. That's the type of value people expected for Phaneuf and if you didn't see the impact he had on this team defensively then I don't get what you were watching.

Years of everyone in Calgary saying they hated him? This guy was a fan favourite, a part of that team's core and we know very little of reported locker room issues so to assume that the belief was he only caused problems is not fair. Calgary dealt Phaneuf because at the time they believed they also improved their offense as well as got a defenseman producing at a high level in Ian White. Ian White might have a better statistical season than Phaneuf, but the wins we added when the Phaneuf deal was made is all the proof you need in terms of impact. We have very little knowledge about the deal being regarding chemistry issues in the locker room and to move a guy for that type of deal based on those issues makes little sense. Regardless, his personality which seems to be pretty frank and brutally honest based on what we've heard (notably him talking to Kadri) is something we need moving forward for this team to be successful.

In 2010-11, Hagman/Stajan/White will have a combined cap hit of $9.5M, while Phaneuf will count for $6.5M, so the Leafs had to make a decision regardless. And again, I'll fight the fact that he's not a "terrible" contract to the death, so there's just no winning here. With the captaincy, the contract, the assets we gave up in the trade, there's a lot riding on Phaneuf returning to dominant form for the Leafs (he clearly didn't have the same impact as in the past last season offensively). Frankly, I'll take my chances with that contract considering he's just 25, logs huge minutes in a key role defensively, and has put up 45+ points in 4 out of his 5 NHL seasons.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Kings have agreed to terms with free-agent defenseman Willie Mitchell on a two-year contract worth $3.5 million per season.

Solid pickup for the Kings. Mitchell didn't play alot last season because of a concussion. But he's an excellent defensive defenseman and I could really see him and Doughty working well together.

Yeah that's one helluva signing, especially salary wise. I really like the Torres signing in Vancouver, too. I was really hoping Montreal would go after him.

that's a lot of money to pay for somebody with that kind of concussion problem. At least it's only 2 years though, so if it turns out to be a bad contract the kings won't hurt their cap space for very long

I agree that that's a lot of cash, but it's a short term deal and a nice pick-up.

And it shouldn't hurt the Kings much if Mitchell continues to have issues, they're good enough to make up for him.

Low risk, high reward. His contract would be considered a flat out steal if he never had the concussion. Mitchell is ridiculously underrated as a shut down defenseman. Breaks my heart to see Willie Mitchell make 3.5 per, Raffi Torres 1 per, and Roman Hamrlik 5.5 per. At least Hammer expires this year.

At least they finally have a player that's showed up in the playoffs; albeit with one of the most stacked defenses in the league in front of him. I'd take Niemi at 2 million over Nabokov any day, and it's way better than have Antero in goal.

Interesting stuff.

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/devils/n ... 4y7xGbE1OP
The NHL has given the NHLPA an ultimatum regarding the contested front-loaded contract of not only the Devils' Ilya Kobalchuk, but Vanocuver's Roberto Luongo and Chicago's Marian Hossa, as well, The Post has learned.

A well placed source reports that the league has informed the Players' Assn. that the league will grandfather the recently submitted Kovalchuk 15-year, $100M contract, Luongo's 12-year, $64M deal that is entering its second season and Hossa's 12-year, $63.3M deal that also is entering its second season into the CBA under the following conditions:

1. That the cap hit on future multi-year contracts will not count any seasons that end with the player over 40 years of age. The cap hit would be calculated on the average of the salary up through age 40 only.

2. That the cap hit on future contracts longer than five years will be calculated under a formula granting additional weight to the five years with the highest salary.

The league has given the PA, which is being directed by Donald Fehr, until Friday at 5 pm to accept these conditions. If the PA refuses, or if negotiations fail to yeild a common ground, the league has informed the PA that:

1. It will reject the Kovalchuck contract.

2. It will move to immediately devoid the Luongo contract.

3. It will move to immediately open proceedings for a formal investigation into the Hossa contract.

The NHL owns sweeping punitive powers against teams and players judged guilty of circumvention under Article 26 of the CBA.

Good pickup for the Sharks. Niemi's a proven playoff performer something the Sharks need badly.

5.5 million over 2 years isn't bad at all.

I hit it right on the head with my predictions. All my friends (Halak-Heads too, mind you) were saying he wouldn't get anywhere near 2 mill per after last season, and I told them it'll be either 2 years/6 or 3 years/8.5

Some rookie-squad tournaments began. Toronto, Ottawa, Pittsburgh and Chicago had a couple of games. The season is fast approaching guys.

New Jersey Devils receive a huge fine from the NHL.

The league announced in a press release Monday that they have fined the Devils $3 million and that the club will forfeit their third-round draft choice in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft as well as a first-round draft choice in one of the next four NHL Entry Drafts.

Kinda suprised that the league fined the Devils, but I like that they did it.

Oilers asked Sheldon Souray to stay away from the Oilers training camp. Can we just get rid of this guy already? Like really just put him on waivers already its like we're gonna get anything back for him.
