The East went bonkers tonight. Washington now leading the conference, Boston has the division, and everyone playing at the bottom of the playoff picture won tonight.

Detroit wins the Central for the 9th time in 10 years and we make the playoffs for the 20th straight season.

That my friends is called consistency.

Hawks controlled every aspect of this game but can't get one in. Incredibly frustrating loss which will double and triple if Calgary and Dallas win tonight.

Yep. Anaheim had two goals disallowed in the final two plus minutes and kept it from being a three-point game, which would have been the worst case scenario.

Some playoff scenarios coming up.

Los Angeles can clinch a playoff spot with a win tomorrow at San Jose.

Nashville can clinch a playoff spot on Tuesday with a win vs Atlanta and a Dallas regulation loss vs Columbus.

Phoenix can clinch a playoff spot on Tuesday with a Dallas loss of any kind or a point against Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The biggest win of the season for the Rangers, down 3-0 in the 2nd, down 3-2 with 3:48 left. Two goals in :51 seconds (plus an empty netter) and New York jumps to 7th with a 5-3 win over Boston. The fine folks in Raleigh are sending pipebombs Boston's way right now.

Nashville wins and temporarily moves past Phoenix and Los Angeles for 4th place. Phoenix and Los Angeles play each other tomorrow so one of them (and possibly both if it goes to overtime which wouldn't be a surprise to anyone) will move back ahead of Nashville tomorrow.

Holy crap, the Sharks didn't even bother showing up in Anaheim.

If the Wings could not get Nashville or Chicago in the first round I will be a very happy man. LA doesn't scare me a bit, and Anaheim and Phoenix aren't bad. But not the Preds or Hawks

I'd really appreciate if Colorado could not suck for one night.

The door's open for the Hurricanes, the Rangers get shut out at home by the Thrashers.

The West still has work to do, Dallas isn't going away.

Six playoff berths yet to be clinched and there's three nights left in the regular season. The NBA has all but one playoff berth decided. And somehow, the NBA is more popular.

Probably helps that the NBA gets several games on ABC, ESPN and TNT while the NHL gets one game a night for like two or three weekdays on Versus and one game on Sunday starting on New Years on NBC.

I was just going to say that I thought Anaheim clinched a spot but wasn't sure since nhl.com has the updated standings but says the Ducks haven't clinched a spot. Looking at the tiebreakers though they have, Dallas can only finish in a points tie with them and the tiebreaker is the regulation and overtime wins category which the Ducks win over pretty much everybody in the West.

So yes, Anaheim, Phoenix and Nashville clinched tonight. Los Angeles lost which means Nashville moves to 4th in the West and has the inside track to be the 4th seed. All they have to do is win in St. Louis for their finale.

If Phoenix beats San Jose in their finale they have clinched at least the 5th seed. Anaheim amazingly can still get the 4th seed although they need quite a bit of help. They need to beat Los Angeles, have San Jose beat Phoenix in regulation and have St. Louis beat Nashville in regulation.

Chicago clinches the 8th seed with a point or a Dallas loss of any kind.

Carolina clinches the 8th seed with a win, an overtime or shootout loss and a New York loss of any kind or a regulation loss and a New York regulation loss.

It's gotta be frustrating for all these teams in the West, especially Dallas, that keep winning, but nothing else around them falls into place.

If I see this correctly, the Hawks can still jump up to 6th if other dominoes fall and they win on Sunday.
