What an awful deal for Buff; if all Chicago was looking for were late picks and meh prospects, Montreal should've been on this like crazy.
And I thought the Halak deal was bad. . .
Whaddaya mean?
Byfuglien is worth a high 2nd with his play in the regular season at best. We got a 1st, and a 2nd for him, and a legitimate Top 6 forward prospect in Morin. All the while freeing up space. Byfuglien's true value is to a playoff contender, and I think its safe to say Atlanta is not quite there yet.
And Buff is going to be, if he isn't already, the best power forward in the NHL. The only benefit is they lose Sopel's contract, which could've been shedded just as easily with Versteeg as it would've Buff.
Safe to say the Hawks aren't repeating.
Admit it... the only thing you know about Byfuglien is what you learned in this postseason, right? It's obvious due to the fact that you clearly don't know anything abouit Dustin Byfuglien.
Saying that he's going to be the best power forward in the league this season is pretty comical.
The truth is that Byfuglien was pretty bad in the regular season (except for those few weeks before the Olympic break when he was trying to make the US team) and had a good stretch in the postseason. He can be pretty good when he actually tries... which is not often.
I'm a Hawks fan and I a thrilled with this trade, considering the circumstances. I had read a few days ago that Bowman was looking for a first rounder and I thought he was crazy (and so did everybody else on every board I read), and he basically got it.
Morin > Aliu
Eager = Reasoner
And then we ton Sopel into a second rounder and Byfuglien into a 1st. Great haul.
I like Byfuglien and I'll always appreciate he did in the playoffs this year, but I'm glad we sold high on him. We're going to lose a bunch of guys, and Byfuglien probably has the biggest disparity between percieved value and actual value of anybody on thet team.
We need to focus on keeping the top 4 forwards and top 4 d-men. Sharp and Hjalmarsson are the only one of those 8 that are in danger, so guys like Byfuglien have to be expendable. We need to keep Sharp and especially Hjalmarsson. Those guys are crucial to our success next season. Byfuglien really isn't.
So to sum it up, we don't have the luxury of paying good money t a guy who is probably going to suck ass in the regular season.
