Sources tell TSN that the Detroit Red Wings are in discussions with veteran goaltender Evgeni Nabokov and it's believed the two sides are close to finalizing a deal.

In his final season with the Sharks, Nabokov posted a 44-16-10 record with a 2.43 GAA and led the Sharks to the Western Conference final where they were eliminated by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Nabokov will have to clear waivers if he signs with Detroit in order to get back into the NHL.

If he clears waivers he'll the Red Wings a pretty lethal goaltending duo. The question is will he clear waivers? Who might pick him up?

I don't see too many teams wanting him unless there's a team like Vancouver who wants to **** over Detroit. If the Wings get him and have a healthy Howard I don't see them being a pushover in the playoff's add in Osgood and your looking at one of the greatest goaltender combo's ever.

apparently the deal is done, so waivers it is

He makes a helluva backup, but i worry it may have Jimmy looking over his shoulder

I seriously doubt that the Wings are his team. I would make that clear if I am Babcock and Mike Illich, Nabakov is a veteran now and I think he wants a cup and knows Detroit is a sure fire contender for that. I wonder what roster moves are next. In a dream work Rick Nash to Detroit for anything but Howard, Zetterberg or Datsyuk.

Little far fetched with the "one of the greatest goaltending combo's ever" remark, but it's definitely a solid pick up by Detroit. However, if Howard goes down in the playoffs, I wouldn't want Nabokov in nets if I'm the 'Wings, I'd definitely put Osgood in. Nabby is a solid goalie throughout the regular season, but man is he a sieve in the playoffs. Osgood has played some HUGE games for Det. in the playoffs, and I think he's got a couple good games left in him.

Islanders just claimed him off waivers. Smart move by them, play for a month or so then move him at the deadline for whatever they can get for him.

Stupid **** Islanders I mean who the hell wants to play there? Nobody I suspect Nabakov to want out. I would ask for my release asap or refuse to play for them.

As for the Wings having one of the greatest goalie rotations ever I mean I can't think off too many better. Look at their careers that is the point I was making.

Nabokov hung up on Snow when he called him.

Funniest thing I've ever read on how it went down.

Snow: Hi, Evgeni. It's Garth Snow.

Nabokov: *Click*

Then Snow says Nabokov hung up on him because he didn't know who he was.

And now the Islanders have suspended him. They should just release him and end this mess, he's not going to report.

effing Garth Snow. He must still be pissed about getting beaten in 97 by the Wings in the Cup Finals.

But seriously just release him. This is absurd
