Could Ryan Smyth be returning to the Edmonton Oilers in order to finish his career with the team that selected him in the first round of the 1994 entry draft?

A deal certainly isn't imminent and won't necessarily be an easy transaction for either the Los Angeles Kings or Oilers to close, but sources tell TSN the 35-year-old left winger has indicated to the Kings his preference would be to play next season in Edmonton if a trade can be worked out.

As much as the potential return of Smyth, a.k.a. Captain Canada, to Edmonton might warm the hearts of sentimentalists who so closely identify the mop-haired veteran with the Oiler franchise, there are some practical reasons why it won't be an easy deal to facilitate and there's no guarantee it will happen at all.

I'd love to see him back in a Oilers uni but I don't know what the Kings are going to want for him. He was a huge part of their team last year and losing him is going to be rough.

I can't see Edmonton offering much for him. If anything, the Kings should try for a 2nd/3rd rounder just to get his salary off the books and make a push for a Parise offer sheet.

New Jersey is taking Parise to salary arbitration so he can't get an offer sheet.

As much as i'd like to get Smyth back I wouldn't offer a 2nd or a 3rd.

I can't think of a thing the Kings would want from the Oilers that Edmonton would be willing to part with.

Re-unite former Badger blueliners Tom Gilbert and Davis Drewiske.

They could have Gilbert if they threw in a pick a two.

Rumour is there's a deal in place with Brule and a pick going back to LA for Smyth.

Apparently its fourth round pick going to LA. That a great deal as far as i'm concerned, Brule's show flashes of being a solid player. But with the injuries and his lack of size he'll have trouble being a consistent player in the NHL.

We get a fan favorite back who plays a physical gritty game and he'll be the perfect mentor to our young players.

And yet, it isn't.

What a mess this had been. Brule's injured so now they gotta get something else to work.
