The club reportedly signed Sutter to a multi-season contract on Saturday and he will replace John Stevens, who was named interim coach after Terry Murray was fired on Monday.
Stevens is expected to serve as the team's head coach for two more games due to immigration issues that will prevent Sutter from immediately taking over.
Sutter has coached 860 NHL games, posting a 409-320-131 record over 12 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, and Calgary Flames. He guided the Flames to the 2004 Stanley Cup final where they lost in the seventh game to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and then stepped away from the bench in July of 2006.
Stevens will go back to an assistant coaching role.
He was a terrible GM but he was always a decent coach and I think he'll do well in LA. That team needs a fire lit under them and he's the guy to do it.
