Why do players want to be goalies so bad?

Post#1 » by Omar CominYo » Sat Apr 14, 2012 4:54 am

Seems like every game I see a player (mostly defencemen) try to make a goalie type save, or if there is a scramble in front of the net they will actually go in the crease BEHIND the goalie and just stand there or drop to their knees. WHAT on earth are they thinking, and WHY don't the coaches or even the goalies themselves say/do something about it?! You can see that these type of desperate plays just give the actual goalie a disadvantage... when will it end?

Example: Canucks/Kings game Luongo makes the save and there's a rebound, and it looks like Luongo is about to freeze the puck and Bieksa does a superman jump to try and land on the puck, but lands on Luongo's leg and the Kings score.

It's like when Goalies would lose their sticks and the defense would always hand them their stick.. it does nothing to help, but puts the defense at a disadvantage because now they have no stick.

Usually when they do it, it's when the goalie is scrambling so, you know, they go in front of the net and block it until the goalie recovers.

And you would much rather have a goalie with a stick than a defenseman or forward. He can save the puck with a stick, poke check, block passes, deflect the puck etc.

A player's stick to a goalie is completely useless... it's just too thin and small to stop the puck, Don Cherry has gone off on rants about this many times before, and now pretty much everyone has caught on and you don't see any defensemen passing their sticks to the goalies. So no, you would much rather have a defenseman with a stick, than the goalie with a player's stick, because the latter is completely useless, while a goalie with no stick can still play his position. The stick-less defenseman can't cover his man in front of the net with any effectiveness with no stick.

There was a clip shown on coach's corner maybe a month or so ago and Carey Price had lost his stick, so the defenseman went to give him his stick and Carey pushed him away cuz he knows that player wouldn't be able to defend well without it.

And I'm talking about them going BEHIND the goalie... they just get in the way, and if the puck does get past the goalie they rarely stop it. They're better off staying in front and covering the offensive players who always put in the loose rebounds than trying to play goalie.
