Salary Cap Question: Vladamir Malakhov

The average NHL payroll is $41.6 million, and the 2006-07 salary cap is set at $44 million. The Sharks come in just under that figure with $43.4 million in payroll, including retired defenseman Vladimir Malakhov's $3.6 million salary.

Is this how the Sharks would be able to sign Drury? Assuming they dump Toskala or Nabby, that would be appropriate for about a 6 mil/year salary. Or does Malakhov's salary not count? Am I missing something or is this painfully obvious to how they would clear the cap room?

Salary cap was moved up to $52 million so that's one reason.

Also Vlad's contract comes off the books now that the season is done

Exactly as I thought. The Sharks should easily be able to sign Drury correct? I mean the only major FA's are Rivet, Guerin, and Hannan, and with Hannan and Guerin expected to bolt, and Rivet probably commanding a similar salary, this team should be set if I am not mistaken. Not to mention one of our goalies is on the way out...

The Sharks biggest weakness is on there blueline. Doug Wilson won't be interested in overpaying for Drury.
