The Edmonton Oilers are back at it again, tendering a five year, $21.5 million offer sheet to Anaheim Ducks Group II restricted free agent Dustin Penner.

I don't see Anaheim offering Penner the contract. Anaheim is really good in the draft and I think they'll take the picks.

It would cost a 1st, 2nd and 3rd?! Thats a lot...

A Vanek-Penner line would be pretty sweet tho

But wouldn't Edmonton be giving up their 1st round pick, a.k.a the good one, to the Ducks?

Lots of people are dumping on this trade but I actually like it from a Oilers point of view. Sure they give up potentially alot in draft picks but there is a chance not one of those 3 picks ever plays a game in the NHL and your receiving a one of the best Young Power forwards in the game back and he's only 24 and in his first full season scored basically 30 goals. His contract wont even look bad in 2-3 years when he's scoring 30+ goals and reeking havek on teams D downlow in opposing teams end. Id rather have given Penner his 4 million a season deal for 5 years then giving it to Blake like the Leafs did who will be 39 by contracts end. Power forwards with Penners toughness and ability to score and very rare finds and I think he will be a force in the west for years to come.

The Oilers have enough top end youth in its system (Gagner, Smid, Schremp, Pitkanen, Hemsky, Cogliano) that it can afford to give up a few picks in my opinion. I really like what the Oilers have done this offseason in adding alot of Toughness in Souray and Penner and a great puck moving defencemen. If this team is healthy all season I dont see why they dont make the playoffs and in turn make that pick surrenderred to the Ducks a pick around #15 on.

In a press conference in which Brian Burke addressed the signing, he called the signing a "classless move, timing wise", also calling the contract "grossly inflated". His decision will most likely be made after consulting fellow members of management during the weekend.
