Ovechkins signs 13 year contract /124m

Post#3 » by Mak » Thu Jan 10, 2008 11:56 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Alex Ovechkin agreed to a $124 million, 13-year contract extension Thursday with the Washington Capitals, working out the details himself in negotiations with owner Ted Leonsis and general manager George McPhee.

The Capitals scheduled a press conference for 8:30 p.m. to officially announce the deal.

Story

They had to keep him but 13 year contract? Thats crazy.

Makes you wonder if Sidney should have waited. He could have gotten a lot more than he signed for.

Crosby knew what he was getting into, he wanted to take less so it was possible to attempt to keep that team together. There is no such problem in Washington

I'd give Ovechkin that long before I'd give Richards

That's a good deal for the Caps. Crosby didn't want the max contract, and didn't pursue it that heavily. AO wanted to get paid, and did a solid of job of representing himself during the negotiation meetings. A good deal for everyone, except for this Leaf fan who hoped a 10 year max (around 10.3M I believe) contract would push Washington too far, causing the Leafs to grab AO, and lose 4 first round picks :P

Still time to rebuild and make cap space for Hossa 8)

This is crazy, he's a good goalscorer but he's not worth those many dollars.

Alexander Ovechkin is a premiere player in the league, and is worth every penny of it. However, the length does bother me...I still don't believe in signing contracts for that long.

I don't like the idea of a long contract like this. Washington could be screwed if the cap goes down to under what it is now, in say the year 2014. I like the idea that Crosby did. Enough time to see if the Penguins are actually looking to make a run at the cup each year. If not, he's able to go in 5 years.

Will this team be around in 13 years?

Seriously, this is absurd.

I couldn't agree more, ovechkin has actually done something in the league to earn a long deal. I still can't get over the richards contract

Well i think you know i wont argue against that.

But again, as others said, the length of contracts in the league is getting silly

If Ovechkin got this I wonder what guys like Zetterberg are going to get? I mean Zetts said that he wants to retire a Wing I hope we can offer him something good and not lowball.

The Capitals rationale is that they bought out Ovechkin's free agent years. It was originally suppose to be a 5 year deal, but then by the time he's an URFA, he'll be 27 years old, so they tacked on 8 more years at what...$70 million total?

Basically, they're looking at it as 2 contracts in 1 which I think is pretty smart, especially if they believe the cap and revenue will all go up.
