when discussing the cba with the nhlpa i think mr bettman shouldve foreseen that if he put a cap on how much players could make they would sign ungodly long contracts, this is something the nba instituted when the 7 year thing came along and i think it was a marvelously smart idea and im just perplexed that gms would give guys like alexander ovechkin (i know hes amazing), mike richards... and the list goes on... the fact is one injury could cripple a franchise and potentially his league and this is sometihng that NEEDS to be dealt with the next time the nhl and nhlpa meet up... youd think teams would learn after the alexei yashin thing

If there is an injury then it does not count against the cap. If the player retires it does not count against the cap. These teams are insured so they are safe

thats not true in all cases, if a player is old enough when he signs his deal his salary counts against the cap even if they retire. (I think the cut off point is 35 years old). This obviously isn't the case for any of these kids signing massive deals, and the long term injury exception is always an option.

I have no problems with allowing teams to sign 10+ year contracts, and I can really see some of the deals turning into cap crippling monsters much like the yashin deal.
