NEW YORK (AP)—Tom Renney has been fired as coach of the New York Rangers.

General manager Glen Sather dismissed Renney and assistant Perry Pearn on Monday. No replacement has been chosen, but assistant Mike Pelino and goalie coach Benoit Allaire remain with the team.

The Rangers have won only twice in their last 12 games after leading the Atlantic Division much of the first half of the season.

The Rangers lost in overtime to Toronto on Sunday night, and are in a fifth-place tie in the Eastern Conference with 69 points—two points ahead of ninth-place Carolina. The top eight teams make the playoffs.

Last week, division rival Pittsburgh fired coach Michel Therrien.

Saw this one coming a mile away.

Looks like they're discussing a deal with John Torrterella (SP?)

He'll get a job somewhere else. A system coach with an incompetent GM signing players that don't fit in said system; something had to give.

Torterella wouldn't be that good of a fit. . . seeing as he's a huge douche with his goalies and I don't see Henrik as the most mentally stable goalie around.

Disagree completely. I think he rode Habby like a pony during TBays cup run. When they had bad goalies, he struggled managing them. With Hank in net, and consistent, i dont think Torts will struggle with his managment.

And i think this will be good for NYR. A super talented underacheiving team needs a shake up from a system coach to a 'just go out there and work harder than you ever have' coach. I fully expect Torts to turn this team around. . .i hope he gets a fair shake to do it. There are a lot of leaders on that team (Drury, Gomez, Redden, Naslund. . . ), i think they will wake up under Torts
