Big ole trades: Phaneuf to Leafs

Change came this morning in a big way as the Maple Leafs announced two deals that greatly change the face of their current roster. Deal number one sent Matt Stajan, Ian White, Jamal Mayers and Niklas Hagman to Calgary for Dion Phaneuf, Fredrik Sjostrom and Keith Aulie.

Deal number two has the Leafs acquiring Giguere in exchange for Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake.

Leafs really did quite the shakeup. Didnt think Phaneuf would get shipped out ever. Leafs fans...whats ur take? Early thoughts is Leafs win big

Big win for the Leafs I never would of thought that the Flames would deal Phaneuf especially for a package like that.

For the Leafs its pretty simple in my eyes. If you can aquire better talent by shipping out lesser talent, you do it. Assume the same trade a year or 2 ago and it would immediately be considered asinine from Calgary's standpoint.

Hagman is inconsistent, but is essentially the x-factor. If he ever gets his act together he can be a game-changer type player. The same isn't true for Stajan or White, even though both are at risk to be lost via FA. Thats the only real fear I have from the Leafs perspective. Well, that and Phaneuf not returning to Norris-candidate form. However... being 24 years old? Its a worthwhile risk. I would have gladly taken the trade even without Aulie - who's icing on the cake in terms of the long-term potential. To me its basically Hagman + players we likely wouldn't have re-signed for Phaneuf + Aulie + a pk/checking line wing who probably won't be much of a factor years down the road.

Jokinen & Prust for Kotalik & Higgins.

Basically a done deal. Sutter's going for Kovalchuk; mark my words.

On the deal or Kovy? Cause it's not just that POS Ek anymore, all TSN's guys have been saying that the Kovy sweepstakes have been LA and Calgary all along. These trades by Calgary re-enforce it. They probably heard LA was getting close and went bat **** crazy unloading contracts.

Only thing is, I can't see what Calgary's gonna offer Atlanta to get Kovalchuk. Regehr, Bourque, Boyd+? Ehh.

I'm talking about the Jokinen/Prust for Kotalik/Higgins deal, which is now not happening

Yeah, Calgary decided they wanted more last minute. It was all over TSN, that's why I said it; they basically said it was done and finished.
