He does not make your defense worse. He's an average defender who has some standout skills on that end (rebounding, secondary rim protection) and can switch. The impact metrics don't say he's bad on that end, the eye test doesn't say he is bad on that end, I genuinely don't get where this is coming from. He's not basketball Jesus, but he's easily a contributor to a good defense and someone who can help improve a bad one. He has a positive D-Lebron and a better than -2.0 DBPM (usually -2.0 to 0 are the guys with reputations as positive defenders). Utah played him in lineups that were terrible for him (next to several bigs), since keeping him on the floor with one other big all his impact metrics have been positive.

He's not a avg defender. His Defense rating is 121 defensive win share is a 0.021 both rank towards the bottom of the NBA. Yeah Ill pass again WE need defense.

His defensive rating is like that because we were playing him next to two other bigs for the first several months of the season. The past 20 games he has an offensive rating of 126 and a defensive rating of 118. The first 29 games of the season we tried to have him handle the ball quite a bit and played him in a lineup with Lauri, Kessler, one of THT/George, and Clarkson. That's just giving up way too much mobility on the perimeter with a fat point guard who can't move, a big traditional center, a small forward who can get beat by quicker guys, and asking Collins to rotate to everything. He can switch reasonably okay, is a fantastic rebounder, plays solid defense against bigs, and offers secondary rim protection.

I said it at the beginning of the season and the trend is showing it, he was a horrible fit at power forward next to Lauri + one of Olynyk/Kessler. Playing him at small ball 5 when Lauri is in, and subbing for Lauri next to a center has really helped him & the team. His defensive winshares are also at +1.2 right now (but I don't think winshares or ortg/drtg tell much at all over the course of the season, I prefer stats that correct for lineup data).

So we trade for him to fix your mistake? Again he doesn't fix what we are looking for in a trade.

No, you trade for him because he's a good fit. Solid defender who hits open threes, runs the pnr well, and is an off-ball player. Totally respect wanting a better option, or someone who makes less money, but for Dallas to aggregate its bad money and a couple of seconds he'd be a really good return. And realistically, he doesn't stop them from dealing for someone they prefer later. I don't see Collins/1st as much different in value than Holmes/Williams/1st.

I do think that Collins is better than what Dallas is offering, but the gap can be filled with Omax maybe? not sure

But from the Dallas side, what would worry me is that Collins started to get better when he was starting at the 5, correct? not sure the pairing with Lively would make much sense. Might as well look into other possibilities before.

He's not a good fit tho. You think he is. AS a mavs fan he's not.
