Does Detroit’s expiring deals get them Tobias via Kyle? How about Hayes?

Post#1 » by eitanr » Tue Feb 6, 2024 2:29 am

Detroit is trying to audition pending free agents this coming deadline. They’ve been linked to Tobias, namely, and have floated around Hayes after his camp is requesting new scenery.

What is the proposed package for Harris? Detroit wouldn't simply move youth or expiring deals.

Would Bogy and Burks for Harris work?

Philly saves face and gets two likely more cost effective options. Still, it's tough to understand why Philly moves one better free agent for two mediocre ones.

Another option is involving Minnesota, who is rumored to be interested in a backup PG.

To Minny: Monte Morris
To Philly: Kyle Anderson, Bojan Bogdanovic, Alec Burks
To Detroit: T. Harris, D. Melton

Detroit can then consider moving Hayes for a wing that can shoot (Pat Connagton, Cedi Osman) or combine him with a second to test a young PG (Tre Jones).

Why for Minny? Morris fits well as their backup 1
Why for Philly? Melton has been hurt and Harris is likely gone. They replace him with 3 playoff caliber rotation talents
Why for Detroit? They make their run at Harris and use Hayes’ return to supplement their wing depth
Why for Spurs? Test Hayes and that potential chemistry with Wemby. If it’s the Bucks, Hayes is a better gamble as a backup PG who can defend than Cam.

No reason to do so. Wait until offseason.

Philly is trading the better players and contracts here. No reason what so ever for them to take this path. Better to trade them for future value and expirings over this and that is very unlikely to happen as well. I don't see any logical trades evolving moving Melton and Harris to Det. Det would have to overpay to convince Philly to move them and that is not something they should be doing for expiring guys.

I think I'm starting to see the black hole that will swallow our cap space. I just don't get it for Detroit. Is Harris much better than Bogs, who's making a good bit less?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I don't see why for Philly.

I also know Detroit wants to keep veterans on the team, but it feels like they should trade Bojan and Burks for assets and then go after Tobias in the offseason if he's the goal. A lot better asset management.

Philly and Detroit just don't seem like good trade partners. Pistons don't need Tobias' bird rights and that's what you'd be giving any kind of asset for in this situation, and Philly would need an asset to be worth moving off of Tobias.

I'm doubtful the Wolves would trade Kyle Anderson for Monte Morris. A Minnesota offer for Morris is likely to be Milton+Brown+2nd(s). Anderson is probably available in a Tyus Jones deal, but Jones is a pretty clear step up from Morris.

It aligns with the rumor. I don’t get why Detroit would trade for an expiring they’d likely overpay in the off season, but here we are.

I’m trying to figure out, if they are to make move for him what it would look like.

My guess is so he’s not put in a sign and trade deal to a non-cap space team and it gives him half a season to build chemistry with the young core.

Detroit has to make a viable offer for Tobias. Haven't seen it yet.

Does PHI have any interest in including Shake Milton in a larger, three way deal?

He just hasn’t been good in MIN, and I wonder if a return to PHI would help? He already knows the system and how to play with the stars. He seems like a “more valuable to you than us” type of player?

Sorry, he was rarely any good in Philly. He had a couple bright moments, but unfortunately they were few and far between.

Based on the recent rumors, I could see Morey wanting pure spacers like Bogy and Buddy, for Harris.

The other route then is a 3-way with Indiana:
Alec BurkS, Monte Morris to Indiana
Buddy, Bojan to Philly
Tobias to Detroit

Feels light for Indiana and unsure the Morris need given they have McConnel backing up at the 1. Indiana may need to add a second and send Morris to Minny and get Kyle Anderson back....feels nice, but it complicates things.
