Here's where I think we are for next year absent Buddy:

Starters: Tyrese, Nembhard, Nesmith, Siakam, Turner

Second Unit: McConnell, Sheppard, Mathurin, Toppin, Smith if back Jackson if Smith leaves.

it isn't obvious to me what kind of player we could trade for who would bump someone from this rotation. Sheppard is the most vulnerable but Walker and Siakam can both play some SF allowing Mathurin to play more SG if Sheppard falters.

if Smith leaves a 3rd Center could be useful, but the Ants have Oscar and Bell and we have second round picks so a trade isn't the only way to fill that need.

perhaps a third/fourth point guard would be useful if Nembhard is going to get the bulk of his minutes at SG.

Toppin is a free agent. I’m not 100% sure Indy is going to offer the qualifying offer right now. Or rather, they might offer it, but would pull it as soon as Siakam hopefully re signs. You don’t want him back on a qualifying offer. What kind of long term deal are you going to offer him that makes sense for him and the franchise?

I'd offer somewhere between 8 and 13 depending upon our read of competing offers.

Smith could probably have gotten more than we paid him the last time. He may value the role he has on his team on the rise. The starter also is on a contract expiring in '25.
Other than Pascal, I don't think we have a bigger objective this summer than inking JS. I'd free up money from Buddy, and Obi and replace them with nobody but Smith if that's what it takes.
I see internal growth from our youngsters as sufficient for next year. I expect Smith to improve again as well.

If the money is good enough, and he gets around 25 minutes per game(11 behind Pascal, 15 behind turner), that could be ok for him. But that mean Jackson won't get much burn. Not sure how much the Pacers want to have Jackson getting more minutes

I think Jalen Smith will be an MLE size contract in the off season. We were all surprised that he resigned 2 years ago and to the size contract that he did. He has looked good this season and his 3 pt shot has been great, all be it a small sample. They called him "Stix" because he was kinda skinny but he's bulked up a lot and now should be called "Logs."

I'd like to see him come back on a $8-10 million per year for 3 with a player option in year 3. Some team will probably beat that, but he'd be a nice insurance policy for injuries to Siakam if he's resigns and Turner. Also of note 2024-25 is Turners contract year. Will he be extended or test UFA in the offseason 2025?

I'm wondering what kind of value does he have right now, although very unlikely he would be traded this week.

Back to the OP what about cutting out one of the Partners in the trade? If you cut the Hornets out, sending Buddy to the Sixers for Roco and Reed works, would the Sixers include anything more?

If you cut the Sixers and make it Hornets and Pacers only PJ for Buddy works as well. I'm sure the Hornets would want some draft picks send them the 2 later picks in this draft and one from some future year. For the Pacers point of view those 2nds don't amount to much anyhow. I like PJ for the reasons others have stated and I like his contract 3 years and declining salary.

I wouldn’t include Reed.
