Memphis doesn’t need another 5 mln contract for the rest of the season they don’t care about. And I don’t see FO to be interested in BB in the next season also. They could easily find a better option at C.

Why would he be another $5m this time as opposed to just a prorated minimum? You’ve already paid him a ton. You’d probably get him back for nothing.

But they seemed to have valued BB a lot. Would assume that hasn’t gone completely out the window? Unless BB burned bridges when he was waived or something and only Memphis fans heard about it?

As for a young center, sure! They can sign the two way that will be vacated by converting GG. Just, I assume Memphis won’t want to play completely with no centers and will want some safety net if Clarke comes back. An old center and a young one could make sense, no?

BB had some appeal when Ja was coming back and we wanted to see if we can make a run at the playins. As soon as that hope was gone then the appeal of BB was gone as well and he was waived. I would be mildly surprised if we land on him again.

To be honest, my impression is that BB is hardly an NBA player anymore. That alone should be a hard stop for further speculations.

Memphis operates solely as to your impressions?

I’m just going off assumptions after initial reports when he was waived that Memphis was going to keep in touch and would consider him again in the future. They absolutely may just say “we’ll just play Roddy at center”.

But no, I wasn’t joking originally. Memphis has seemed to like Biyombo. They’re short on centers. They look able to do both a conversion of GG, backfill the two way with a young center, and still also sign Biyombo, if they so chose. That was all I went off of.

Seems like good pick up for the Celtics. I don't know much about Tillman; I watched the Pacers play the Grizzlies last week and when I saw him I thought "wow who is this 40 year old veteran the Grizzlies have playing for them?" and it was Xavier Tillman who is somehow only 25 years old. Either young people these days all look way too young or this is just the oldest looking 25 year old I've ever seen.

Seems solid, but anyone know why his advanced stats went off a cliff this season? Because the Grizz are bad?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

He has the second highest def-epm in the league, so not exactly sure I agree with this statement in whole. He is a limited player, with a limited skillset. He hustles, plays good positional D, and makes the right pass or play. That is great when he is surrounded by teammates better than him and he serves as the glue guy. When he is asked to step into a bigger role or just surrounded by bad players then there is nothing for him to glue, and his game...especially on offense falls off.

You are perfectly entitled to make any conclusions. To sum up on my end: 1. BB didn’t look good. It was a desperation pick up 2. Memphis would keep him if they liked him 3. Memphis doesn’t need C this season 4. Memphis will likely find a better option for the next season.

Just seemed weird that you said that Memphis wouldn’t consider re signing BB simply because of your impression that BB is hardly an NBA player anymore. The way you wrote it seemed to imply that Zach Kleiman has to reach out to you to decide.

We all have eyes and some significant experience in assessing NBA players. If BB didn’t look good on the floor, it was noticeable to Zach, me, other fans. and would be pretty noticeable to you too, I am sure.

James Johnson hasn’t looked good o PF the floor for 2 seasons. But he's been a good asset for Indy and has gotten Indy to give him 3 (soon to be 4) full season contracts and 2 ten day contracts over just 2 seasons.

Sometimes, management/coaches have vets they like. And midseason, when so few guys are available to begin with, it’s slim picking.

This is why I am surprised he went for so cheap. We could use him in NY for sure and could have easily beat that price...

Agree with this. Young players at the end of the bench are nice to have but you actually need some adults in the locker room too. The NBA season is long and tough and you need some vets around the young players. If BB was good in the locker room then maybe they should consider bringing him back. JJ has been great for Indy despite not being a 20 & 10 guy.

He has been battling a knee injury too that could have effected the price paid, I think since we are tanking we were just being cautious though. I am sure we called around and did our due diligence and took the best offer. I like Tillman but I think we can land someone a little better next offseason with the MLE or using our 12.6m TPE. We could circle back to him in FA as well.

His lack of size is a killer. Together with really bad FT.

His FT% went to hell along with his FG%, so I suspect an outright hand/wrist/whatever injury he's playing through.

Oh. Knee injury? What's the story on that?

I'm pleased with this for Boston. All going well he shouldn't factor into our playoff rotations at all, but he's a solid insurance option at that price.

C's have been getting surprisingly good play out of Kornet/Queta at the 5, but Tillman is a much different archetype, so at least he's bringing something to the table that the C's didn't already have. Hopefully he gets a bump in terms of his offensive play by being around better overall talent. As long as he's not a total black hole on that end, I can see him adding value due to the defense.

I expect him to get a decent amount of run down the stretch to keep Horford/KP fresh and give him a chance to supplant Kornet/Queta in terms of backup minutes.

Really curious what kind of contract he'll command this summer. He's a solid guy but with a pretty clear ceiling. 25 years old, so not likely having a ton of room to develop further. C's being a 2nd apron team will be incentivised to bring him back but he's an UFA and if he gets a surprise offer I have to assume Stevens walks away due to the tax implications.

Also wonder what this means for Queta. I think he was on the road to being converted from his two-way, and the C's have left a roster spot open, but with Tillman in the fold and Lamar Stevens headed out I wouldn't be surprised if they looked to add a wing instead (either buyout or with their remaining TPE).

This is slightly more value than I thought Memphis would get for Tillman. They're distant 2nds, but both have some upside I think. I really thought Tillman wasn't going to be moved though, especially after trading Adams. Not that I thought Tillman was untouchable, but more so that the value they'd extract from him wasn't worth giving up the option to keep him. Konchar was the guy I thought Boston would kick the tires on.

Feels like a solid win/win deadline deal.
