NOP/CLE/UTA

Post#1 » by Mrakar » Sun Mar 17, 2024 4:58 pm

The whole point of the trade is that Cleveland and New Orleans add the better fitting players to their roster.
Trade is made with some assumptions:
- Cavaliers and Pelicans realize in postseason that the fit between their stars is not the best
- Cavaliers have a wink-wink deals with Donovan and Lauri for extensions
- Jazz decide to go full tank

CAVS trade: Garland, Mobley, Lavert, Niang
CAVS recieve: Ingram, Markkanen, Daniels, Lidell

Cavs roster:
Mitchell/Porter Jr.
Daniels/Merrill
Ingram/Strus
Markkanen/Wade
Allen/Jones

Cavs decide to split Garland/Mitchell and Allen/Mobley pairings since there is multiple proofs that they are better with only one out of the pair. They add excelent defensive guard next to Mitchell and more offense and spacing in Ingram and Markkanen. Team looks more well rounded and of course this is under assumption that Markkanen and Ingram are extending(Mitchell also ofc).
It will be hard to sell Cavs on trading guys they drafted and keep guys they traded for, but i really think this makes them a better team.

PELS trade: Ingram, Daniels, Liddell, Lakers 1st(or one more Pels first, whatever Jazz want), Bucks 1st(later one since it has more value then Pels and earlier Bucks pick) and 2 more Pelicans 1st.
PELS recieve: Garland, Mobley

Garland/Alvarado
Jones/Hawkins
Murphy/Ryan/(if possible extend Marshall)
Zion/Robinson-Earl
Mobley/Nance jr

+ depth from CJ Mccollum trade.

Pelicans finally get a real point guard in Garland and defensive anchor in Mobley. They hope Mobley can develop some kind of consistent outside shot for this to really work. Pelicans also trade Mccollum for depth(but expiring contracts) since Murphy and Mobley extensions are nearing.

JAZZ trade: Markkanen
JAZZ recieve: Lavert, Niang, 4 1sts of their choice from Pelicans.

They decide to go full tank mode for Cooper Flagg next season. They can flip Lavert for more assets and they now have a lot of more draft capital in next years. That future Bucks 1st rounder can be really good and Lakers 1sts this year will be in lottery probably(or they can defer to next year).

I'm open to suggestions considering draft capital movement from one team to another.

If the jazz were to go full rebuild then I would probably go for this but I would want Hawkins as well. As far as the picks go I would want the lakers pick which I would defer to 2025. The bucks 2027 pick and the pelicans 28 and 30 picks.

Cavs decline. Cleveland is trading 2 young players on team control for 2 players on an expiring contract. I don't have Daniels as enough to bridge that gap. Heck, even if they were able to resign both, they would both need the max and that would put Cleveland in a terrible position going forward.

Ingram and Markkanen will earn as much as Garland and Mobley. That means Cavs will be in same problem without trade. Mobley is getting extension 1 year after Ingram and Markkanen. They will need to move Strus for expiring probably.
Trade was "made" under asumption that they both(Markkanen and Ingram) agree on extensions.

Lauri and Ingram would be getting 30% max compared to 25% for Mobley and Garland. I am not sure what the new NBA salary cap projects to be after the TV contract is signed, but that could throw a wrench into things as well. If this trade forces us to give up Strus as well then it is an easy no.

Utah would just cut out New Orleans and make the deal work.

Lauri can't be extended (functionally) by a team without the cap space to renegotiate and extend, so that also makes this DOA.

No interest from Cavs end, and I wouldn't trade with Utah (Ainge) just on principle...

This is so bad from the Cavs end it's not fixable. I mean how do you not see the Pelicans getting completely cut out of this? The Pelicans are giving up almost nothing of value besides the picks, in which case, the Cavs would likely prefer their own picks back from the Jazz. The Pelicans will make Murphy available, who won't get you both Garland and Mobley, or there really isn't anything to talk about.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

Pels obviously love this, it’s meh at best for the Cavs, and unappealing for the Jazz.

Garland and Mobley are only tradeable if the Cavs are getting back long-term assets that will be happy in Cleveland. The long-term risks are too high otherwise. Ingram and Markkanen aren't realistic targets in this kind of deal until 6 months after they sign extensions with their current teams-- so 2025 at the earliest.

The prime target for the Cavs from these two teams would be Murphy.
