Wiz/Dallas/Charlotte: Dallas dumps THJ, Wiz & Hornets get picks

Post#1 » by mhd » Tue May 28, 2024 12:05 am

Simple trade:

Dallas trades: THJ (expiring)+2025 Toronto 2nd+2028 Miami 2nd for Johnny Davis (rookie option can be declined in October making him an expiring)+JT Thor (expiring)

Washington trades: Davis+Holmes (expiring) for THJ (expiring)+Richards+2028 Miami 2nd

Charlotte trades: Richards+Thor (expiring) for Holmes (expiring)+2025 Toronto 2nd

Why for Dallas? The going rate for dumping an expiring contract to save money is two future 2nds. This deal saves the Mavs roughly 9 million in salary (i.e. enough to resign Derick Jones Jr).

Why for Charlotte? Get a future 2nd while shedding Nic Richard's extra year Foran expiring in Holmes.

Why for the Wiz?
1). Open up a roster spot while getting a future 2nd.

Market here has said Dallas can do this cheaper especially with them having to take 2 players back unlikely to make the roster. No real interest in paying 2 2nds to turn THJ into dead salary.

Simpler with just one other team.

Unless it's Detroit, I can't see any other team taking on the entirety of THJ for two 2nds without sending out small expirings. Heck, Detroit traded two seconds just to get out of Marvin Bagley's extra year on his contract specifically to increase its cap space for this off-season.

Utah seems to want to save space for a Lauri extension.

Philly is saving its space for big FA targeting. Same with OKC.

Orlando will want a contributing vet (like a KCP for example) to use its cap space on.

The only one left is the Spurs and I can see them either using it on a contributor or getting better haul (i.e. at least one future 1st) from desperate tax-paying/apron teams.

I suggest you go back a few pages on this board. We tried out a bunch of versions of this idea that land Dallas a roster worthy player while saving enough money to bring back Jones. Your version has them paying the same price to dump the same money but giving them two guys who don't make the roster. Which is just dead money which doubly sucks as they become a first apron team.

Dallas doesn't have to move the whole contract, but can take back similar salary as you have only attached to a guy who can play minutes.

Nobody is suggesting Dallas pay the asking price to eat all of THJ or even suggesting there is a team willing to do that.

works for me. Also Richards is an expiring next year (plus a $5M unguaranteed option)

With that said, the Toronto 2nd is the most valuable piece in this trade
investigate Adam Silver
