Knicks/Wiz/Hawks: Capella to Knicks, Wiz get their pick back, Hawks duck the tax

Post#1 » by mhd » Fri May 24, 2024 1:31 pm

Simple trade:

Wiz trade: Holmes (expiring)+Johnny Davis (expiring)+2026 2nd+2027 2nd for Bogs (expiring)+Wiz protected future 1st (via Knicks)
Knicks trade: Bogs (expiring)+Future Wiz pick (top 10 protected in 2025, top 8 protected in 2026, otherwise turns into Wiz 2026 2nd+Wiz 2027 2nd) for Capella (expiring)+Davis (expiring)+Wiz 2026 2nd.
Hawks trade: Capella (expiring) for Holmes (expiring)+Wiz 2027 2nd

Why for the Wiz?
1). That future pick will most likely never convey, but they do the deal to ensure that it 100% never conveys. The same future 2nd round obligations are still sent out (if the first rounder doesn't convey), but they can sleep easier at night knowing they won't lose a future first.

Why for the Knicks?
1). Get some I-Hart insurance. If he gets an offer in FA deemed too rich for the Knicks, they get a stopgap expiring center in Capella to pair with Mitchell Robinson. They only really lose out one future Wiz 2nd as that future Wiz 1st will most likely never convey.
2). Take a chance on a bust Johnny Davis who is expiring anyways (I can't see the Knicks picking up his rookie option in October)

Why for the Hawks?
1). Duck the tax while getting a future 2nd. With them likely drafting Sarr, Capella is clearly on the block.

Think NY wouldn’t do until they lost Hartenstein.

No reason not to do this for the Wiz if everyone else is on board. Holmes played well for us but we are tanking again and I have no faith in Johnny Davis becoming a solid NBA player though I've been wrong before.

How are Wiz getting that pick back and Bogs while not giving up anything of value?

They are not really getting a pick back per se. They are still sending out the future 2nd round obligations if it doesn't convey (the 2026 2nd & 2027 2nd), they are just getting insurance to make sure that it never conveys. It is pretty clear that they'll be the worst team in the NBA next year (Detroit will have to spend that 50+ million in cap space on productive players). No chance that pick falls outside the top 10 in 2025. Ditto in 2026 as they still don't have a single player who will ever make an all-star game. Along with Portland, they are the only true tanking teams in the NBA for the foreseeable future.

Basically a future second rounder to rent Clint Capela. Not a bad option if we lose Hartenstein.
Why rely on nuance, facts and logic when you can bludgeon the other side with mindless repetition of "Duuur McDaniel's has potential :tooth and still be treated as if you were reasonable.

I'd like it even more if the Wizards could flip Bogdanovic for anything of value.

At this point, I'm not sure Capella would help us more than just rolling with Achiuwa & Sims.
