MEM / HOU: Grizzlies get Clingan

MEM trades: 2024 MEM 1st (9), 2027 MEM 1st (unprotected)
HOU trades: 2024 BRK 1st (3)

Houston moves down a bit in what seems like a pretty flat draft from 2-10 and gets a future asset. Memphis moves up to ensure they get their guy.

There is no prospect on this draft whose value against #9 is an unprotected FRP. As for Clingan, I wouldn’t take him even at #9.

Granted, I'm not high on Clingan, but an unprotected FRP seems like an overpay to move from #9 to #3 in this draft.

I got Clingan at around 10 as the BPA in this draft, willing to take him over a few of those guys based on need. But no way would I want to give up a future UP pick for him and tie up our ability to trade in the future. He is a mid 1st talent in a normal draft and all this hype around him has me dumbfounded, his player profile is not worth a lot in the league. I think if we are going to trade up it is likely to 6 if Clingan is still there and able to get him at a cheaper price than 3.

But much better route than any kind of trade up is to stay at nine and take BPA and if that is not a center then use a 2025 1st top 10 protected to trade back into the draft for a center like Ware.

So I can't speak to what teams value what players nearly as accurately as other posters seem to be able to.

But going by the premise that Memphis wants this player badly(again not saying they do, just playing along), top 4. top 1, unprotected the pick and this seems okay.

But I always believe if you love a guy, go get the guy. Don't mess about.
