Getting Milwaukee under the 2nd Tax Apron with Charlotte's Help

Post#1 » by bdpecore » Fri Jun 14, 2024 2:27 pm

CHA In: Pat Connaughton and #33

MIL In: Nick Richards and #42

Charlotte adds a serviceable veteran wing and move up to the top of the 2nd round for taking on some additional salary.

Bucks drop below the 2nd apron to gain access to the TPMLE and dangle it to attract a 3&D SG to start next to Dame (i.e. De'Anthony Melton, Josh Richardson or Gary Harris).

I consider Pat's value as neutral so I don't think Charlotte would have an issue sending him to a contender for an expiring contract.

I think Nick could fetch an expiring/tpe and a decent 2 right now. Don't see them taking on extra money and an extra year for so meager of a jump. Take out 42 and it is still likely a little short unless they really want someone at 33 or value Connaughton.

FWIW I'd probably take Pat for GP2's expiring contract. Maybe Charlotte throws in some minor incentive but idk, I'd do it straight up.

The idea is there but does Milwaukee need Richards? If they’re able to reroute him for some wing or guard help that’d be nice. This feels like a 4 teamer or a trade where the expectation is that guys aren’t sticking around very long.
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.

let's be honest, nobody NEEDS Richards, but it definitely can't hurt to have an extra 7-footer behind your 36-year-old starting center. I don't think he's really commanding any real value here.

hard to know if we have any use for GP2 as he's a very weird offensive fit on most teams, but yeah I prefer him to Pat for the reason that he's expiring.

I would pass, Charlotte just does not need any picks in this range. We have Nick Smith Jr, James Nnaji, and Amari Bailey all picked in this draft range just last year. In fact I hope we sell the #42 for cash or trade for a future 2nd.

I mean unfortunately GP2 is just never healthy. Whatever you get from him on the court is gravy, I'd view him purely as an expiring and a good locker room/vibes guy.

that's ridiculous because Nnaji just had back surgery and might or might not even come over next season, and Bailey essentially didn't play, never got his two-way contract converted, and will be a RFA two-way this summer.

Charlotte should try to get any asset/pick we can possibly get to improve the team in the present/future.

Why? so we can put more guys in the G-league that won't ever play?

At some point you run out of roster spots. We already have to many of them devoted to projects. There is a point of diminishing returns and we are way past that.

and most of those "projects" (McGowens, Richards, Poku, etc) suck. Bring in some new guys.

Contrary to what Steve Clifford says, you can develop more than one young player at a time if your coaching staff is semi-competent.

Who ever you draft at 33 in a weak draft is going to suck way worse than those guys while also being behind Baily and Smith Jr. There is no chance you are drafting someone at 33 that can get in the rotation. Meanwhile you can get way better players like Miccic and Mann of the scrap heap for next to nothing.

McGowins isn't good, but when you draft a 20 year old you don't expect him to be a good NBA player right away, at least not in the late first early 2nd range. If you draft a guy that is 2 years away and then give up in the first 2 years they are never going to hit. Better to ditch all these projects and sign some vets that know how to play.

I mean, the players projected to go around 33 (Bobi Klinttmann, Ajay Mitchell, Trey Alexander, Ryan Dunn, Tyler Smith, KJ Simpson) aren't far off from the guys taken at 33 the last few years (Leonard Miller, Christian Koloko, Jay Preston, Daniel Oturu).

The weak draft conversation isn't about guys picked in the late first/seconds, but among the lottery. This draft has a nice amount of guys that could be exceptional glue guys/role players and above average JAGs.

so draft someone at any other position but SG where they won't be behind NSJ and Mann (Bryce and Bailey doesn't matter, Bailey is a 2W and Bryce is getting cut whether you want to or not)... you act like we have an overabundance of prospects, when we absolutely do not. We should also sign vets.

If you are trading 42 for future second pretty sure there will be some interest. Some interesting role player available there .
