There’s no denying he’s been awful so far, but I think the context of the team hasn’t done him any favors. He’s never been in an environment where there was a culture of defense

I've watched Simons on defense. His reactions are bad and his lateral mobility is extremely poor. But more than that, as a 6 year vet it's crazy he still doesn't seem to know his defensive rotational responsibilities and seems surprised by being screened and picked. And of course, he rarely plays with intensity on defense; and again, hes been in the league 6 years, and half of that time he's been coached by a supposed defensive guard coach in Billups.

in other words, he plays with good BBIQ, aggression, and skills on offense (all geared toward his own shot-creation) But with terrible BBIQ on defense coupled with passivity and no skills at all

Simons would have to improve a lot to just become a weak defender. Now good defensive teams can hide weak defenders pretty easily as long as they don't have many of them. And again, his offense is pretty good, most of the time
