I don’t think Portland cares if it’s Richards 5 million or Bertans 5 million. Richards and Powell are both 3rd string centers, Richards better but if either is playing - you’re probably not happy..

If it’s Bertans you could just stretch the five mil and the tax problems are gone in Portland?

Not sure if I like the stretching part, but would be the easiest way to duck the tax the rest of the way.

Or just find a different way to clear that last 4-5 million I guess.

Just checking, but does Bertan’s contract need to be guaranteed prior to him being traded? That is the case with many non-guaranteed contacts, so I wasn’t sure if that was the case here. Also worth noting, Richards definitely holds more value than a waived Bertans because of the ability to be sent out in follow up trades. But you are right that if the main goal is salary savings and 2nds, either version of the trade will do. It is simply a matter of whether Portland can save salary in a Brogdon/Simons/Grant trade instead, and if not, this trade works.

It only needs to be guaranteed enough to complete the trade. So should only be 5.5 or whatever is already guaranteed.

Richards is more valuable than dead salary. But neither is valuable I guess was my response.

My only point was Richards isn’t going to stop Portland from doing the trade. They might not do it because they can clear the salary else where and love the example Thybulle has for the kids. That’s fair.
