2 Mavs deals with BKN and PHX
1st obviously has been done by me a few times
THJ/PRosper/25 TOR 2nd for Finney-Smith
Nets get a prospect, a good 2nd, and clear 25 cap space.
Washington for Allen
Suns get a bigger, better defender to help balance out their lineup around the 3 scorers. Allen makes just more than Washington so its perfect money-wise with their restrictions.
Dallas gets an elite shooter they could use in Allen with DFS in to replace Washington. Now a Powell dump away from retaining Jones as well.

Re: 2 Mavs deals with BKN and PHX
I think BKN would want someone they can used beside THJ. That's $16 M sitting around for nothing but Prosper & TOR 2nd.
Beside Claxton their best players are on the wing or a guard right? Bridges, Johnson, Thomas, & Schröder
Finding a big in case they lose Claxton would have to be the deal for them to use DFS on.

Nets pass. DFS probably opts out unless 24 is a disaster because his PO is effectively 1 year at what is now close to MLE money. He will have NTPMLE offers multi-year.
In a weak draft I think a more likely move is a playoff team like SAC or ORL being willing to move a mid-round FRP for him. Sac swapping some contracts along with #13 seems like a pretty reasonable move for both sides.

Explain the better fit portion to me if you don't mind. Offensively, sure he spaces for the stars. But defensively it would be nice for KD to not have to take all the tough assignments, right?
Anyway sounds like both halves of this are a bust, but more feedback on why its wrong is always helpful.

Re: 2 Mavs deals with BKN and PHX
Mavs out imho, I understand the idea behind this trade cause we badly need shooting but I wouldn't move PJ unless it is for a clear cut upgrade and talent-wise it's not Allen who is an elite sharpshooter but that's it.
And honestly I wouldn't help a direct conference rival unless it's an overpay. I have PJ definitely more valuable than Allen, I mean he has been instrumental for a team that just made the Finals..
If Mavs want to target a specialist, I'd rather go after the cheaper Huerter than giving up PJ for a shooter.

i dont think washington's defense makes up for the drop in offense/lack of spacing. Washington's is not that special of a defender while Allen is elite at 3 pointers.
Phoenix is not going to win games w/ their defense w/ or w/o washington. They are more likely to find success outgunning the other teams and Allen's spacing is important for their iso stars to work and not get doubled as much

Re: 2 Mavs deals with BKN and PHX
I think I’d rather keep PJ here even if you add DFS… Allen had an amazing shooting stretch this season and even at his normal 40% - is a great fit in Dallas..
But I’d much rather end up with a likely lesser 3rd guard using the 2025 first and keeping the good starter.
For Phoenix, I think either guy is a great fit, but I’m not sure PJ is consistent enough for Phoenix to do it. Though I’m not sure what better forward they are going to get than PJ so I think they should do it as similar to Dallas, they can try and find a different 3rd guard while PJ is a tougher role to fill.
With these two teams, I was picturing what Dallas needs to add in a Nurk/Allen for Gafford/(Green or THJ)… And if whatever Dallas adds is enough to turn THJ into something that makes Phoenix do it. Or if Phoenix adds to Dallas’ pick..
And then if you want Dallas to dump the other of Green/THJ for cap space, you can likely end up with the full MLE still.

Re: 2 Mavs deals with BKN and PHX
Keep in mind suns can’t trade Allen until right before the season starts.
I do think Suns could use more size and with limited assets that means can’t rule out a Grayson Allen trade.. with that said Grayson Allen was looking like prime Klay Thompson last year while PJ can’t be counted on as a shooter. I think the value is far off from phx perspective here..

Allen was playing alongside special offensive talent in Booker/kd/beal for most of last year…. And I trusted his shot the most…. Really special shooting season last year

I like the DFS trade, but not to replace PJ, to start with him/back him up.
Dont like addind a one dimentional shooter like Allen. I'd rather try a shot creator guard for Hardy/Maxi/1st
Luka/Exum
Irving/SG
DJJ/Green
Washington/DFS
Lively/Gafford

I think Dallas can find a 40% from 3 on solid volume bench shooter for cheaper else where. But I don’t hate either trade.

Maybe I missed it. But DFS is Dorian Finney Smith, right? The 10 year vet who is a career 8/5/1 player who just came off a season averaging 8/5/1…
On what planet would he be worth a lottery pick in any draft?

Re: 2 Mavs deals with BKN and PHX
THJ/TOR 2nd is a generous offer for DFS, I understand if the Nets want to keep DFS, great guy and every team should love to have him on their roster, but Mavs aren't overpay for talent mode, especially talent you tried to sell before and failed to do so, I have DFS value significantly less than at 2023 deadline, and Mavs couldn't get a 1st for him.
I don't see Mavs considering the PHX trade at all, Grayson Allen is a great fit, elite shooter and a good defender, but a PF who can rebound, score around the rim and guard big wings successfully is much harder to find, his shooting can be rough a times, if it wasn't, he'd be a 30/yr player, he's also from DAL and had a great chemistry with the crowd.

That’s what I was thinking. Allen is a 42% shooter from deep over the past three seasons and led the NBA in 3% last season. I would move him in the right deal but this isn’t it.

Yeah I still like the fit of PJ, but I think you guys and Crives are correct that Allen is simply the better player. I think I just got excited that PJ was a player who fit a clear Suns need whose salary just perfectly matched up to make the deal legal for the Suns.
But if the offensive downgrade is seen as too much, then yeah its a miss. Suns are so hard to do much with because of the 2nd apron and the lack of matching contracts. Have to keep thinking on them.

I agree that PJ is a better fit. I think this is close. There are a lot of reasons why the Suns would consider this trade. I’d just hope they got some much needed draft capital too.
