Man I’d love to ruin this and just keep Horford and trade Gafford..

I think this is technically legal as Horford switches teams enough times. Not sure it’s worth having the dead cap for Dallas. McGee’s dead cap is already showing how a little amount can really impact plans of building under apron.

Horford was talking about wanting to play not just next season, but beyond. This makes that difficult unless he's willing to play for the min moving forward. And considering he's already on a bargain contract as is....

Toronto would also need to drop a little under $5M in salary on draft day to avoid being a taxpayer in the 2023-24 season. Who wants the lesser McDaniels?

Oh, and if I'm BOS, I'm not trading Horford: I'm going to try to repeat. Even if it's just for chemistry reasons I;d expect him back on Boston.

But if the draft day trade happens, I think it stops there. I can't see a reason for TOR to want to participate after the draft day trade. After taking Horford into the Siakam TPE, why not just keep him? Who would be a better mentor to Toronto's youngsters trying to learn how to play in Darko's movement offence than Horford? I'd use the remaining resources (Brown, NTMLE, maybe Olynyk) to try to trade for a good backup PG rather than using the NTMLE to pick up a couple more SRPs.

Well Boston never pays to dump Horford, right? The only reason they would do that is if they knew the whole deal was in motion. There is no scenario where Toronto gets Horford and multiple picks for free. Boston isn't paying to dump one of their core players.

BOS don't really dump him, he goes back never goes anywhere during this transaction.
The deal can move to July 1st and 6th, it's just a separation for technicality, it has to be 2 deals

Agree BOS doesn't pay to dump Horford -- one of the many reasons this construct wouldn't happen.

Another reason is if TOR took Horford into their TPE -- likely costing something, not getting paid to take a salary dump -- TOR has no incentive to participate further. The man can still play.

I also think that both parts of a pair of trades need to make sense stand-alone, and I don't think you can obligate the teams to the second trade that will occur in the following season. If there is a loophole in the CBA that allows a June 26/27 trade to be linked to a trade in the following season, I bet they'll look at closing that loophole!

There are some extremely liberal interpretations where these are legal:)

Well…looks like a win win win if it is allowed….id have to guess that there is some fine print somewhere or the Leagues ability to not approve that would hold this up.

There is nothing that forces fulfillment of another deal if a deal is done, and there are some general guidelines that warn about this, but nothing specific, that's why I wrote fast and loose in title, here's a hypothetical.

Nico Harrison calls Massai: Hey bastard, remember when you pulled out of the KP deal last second, I still hate your guts, BTW, I want to dump THJ, wanna take your 2nd rd pick next year and take him?

Massai: I hate myself, I paid the 8th pick in this draft to go get the useless stretch Poeltl, Nah, I want to operate over the cap, no cap space shoe sales guy, I do have 10M TPE lying around if you like.

Nico: No can do, I need to dump THJ, find a 9-10 contract, send it to me and I S&W and send you the Canadian bum we have on top of it.

Massai calls Stevens: Hey POS, I can't believe they let have Jrue like that, you won't believe what I'm going to tell you...
