What can the Lakers do to get in on Cam Johnson?

Is there any interest in Rui or not really? Without him its a bit tougher for salaries, unless Dlo opts in

I think DFS can be had for 1 FRP with some level of protection. I'd try to get top 8 or 10 but probably be willing to do lotto as long as it rolls over until it conveys.

CamJ is probably 1 unprotected and maybe JHS in there too?

Not positive what the salary match rules are for you guys in new CBA, looks like JHS + Rui + 1 more minimum salary gets close to CamJ. DFS obviously simpler since he makes less.

If Dlo opts in, I wonder if Dlo, Hayes/Reddish (filler) and a 29 1st unprotected is enough?

Feels like it ought to be, especially if they can flip Dlo somewhere for some minor additional asset(s)

I don't know if the Nets want to preserve/maximize '25 cap space or if they're ok dipping into that. They did get their '25 & '26 picks back, so they can tank for 2 years, but I think they'd prefer to take 2 stabs at free agency. Tanking for 2 years & then striking out in '26 free agency would be a tough pill to swallow. Right now they have 6 picks in the strong '25 draft (4 1sts & 2 2nds). I could see them tanking hard this year, making a splash in the draft & then try to attract young vet FAs to help bring along the rookies. If they have no success in '25 FA, the '26 pick is insurance. Even if they don't spend in '25 FA, they're going to want to be showing promise in order to try to attract players (Fox?) in '26.

Cam Johnson for the Lakers is tough, because he would trigger a hard cap at the 2nd apron. That may or may not matter to them, but it needs to be a consideration. Rui or an opted in DLo could be traded for DFS without triggering the hard cap.

I would prefer young players on rookie deals for Cam. For example, if the Nets could get one of Mathurin, Walker or Nembhard from Indy, that would be an ideal return in my opinion. For teams like the Lakers that lack that type of young piece, it would have to be future picks.

Well your expectation is teams will start to offer more?

My expectation is Brooklyn will sell their players for what they are worth on the market.

I think that teams already have beat those prices. Pretty sure the Kings and Cavs made their firsts available for Cam in particular but that wasn’t enough for the Nets. We will see but I think Cam in particular carries significantly more value than what you proposed.

Pretty sure the Pistons could be talked into Ivey for Cam J if that’s the kind of young player the Nets want.

Guess it depends on how much the new POBO wants to wait to evaluate what we have. The extra salary doesn’t really matter unless we’re far more successful at using our cap for assets than I expect.

I don’t love it, but there’s a lot of evidence that suggests Cade and Ivey don’t work on the floor together.

Clowney isn’t going anywhere and I can’t see a reason to trade Sharpe either

This isn’t the direction Brooklyn is going.

They’re in full tank mode.

Neither Cam nor DFS are getting traded for 2nds.

Maybe DFS at the deadline for 4-5 2nds.

Agreed but I don’t know about the Kings 1st.

Many on this forum are under the misconception that Cam Johnson’s contract is a negative. I think it’s because many fans are not aware of how much the cap has increased and that it will continue to do so by 10% each year for the foreseeable future.

Cam will make 13% of the cap, which is certainly market rate for a big starting caliber 3&D forward.

I can see about 96 million dollars of reasons to trade a 4th year backup center.

Boston “overpaying” for Sharpe makes sense though. Expect Horford to either be retired or playing for cheap in 2025-2026..

Not sure about the bolded. Is there any reporting on that?

Shams reported the deadline offer even bigger than that since it included Green, I haven't seen any confirmation re the HOU offer now a few months later but i think it stands to reason they would have taken what amounts to less than their prior offer (imo).

Obviously pre-lotto nobody knew the 2024 pick would jump up to #3 from the Nets slot at #9, but logically it seems pretty simple to me to expect Houston would have been happy to keep Green in lieu of the 3rd pick (which was reported yesterday they would have traded if not for Sheppard being on the clock).

Read on Twitter

The reason that would surprise me is that if the Nets could've gotten their picks back for Bridges, and kept the Suns picks, I have that as the better option over what they actually did.

I think those future Knicks picks are juicy.

That would be something I'd absolutely pursue if I were the Nets. What do you think the parameters of a deal for those two would like? Would the Nets or Pistons need to give up more, or just an even one for one as I'm assuming you have the cap space to just absorb the difference in salaries

I'd rather hang onto Sharpe as the Celtics have no players in his range to trade back to the Nets and a couple of seconds doesn't move the needle for a team with so many firsts. If he has a great year this year, they can either trade him for a better return next off-season or even retain him as he'll be a restricted free agent.

The Boston deal I would look at would be a first for Sharpe and a second or two.

Boston is one of the very few teams that might up their offer to a first, even if Brooklyn has to add the seconds coming back.

I don’t see a lot of RFA’s returning great value once free agency starts though. Teams usually just offer a couple extra million and overpay the player to get the team not to match.

But if Sharpe does have a great season, I assume Claxton is the one traded, not Sharpe..

I didn't realize you would offer a first. As long as the protections on it are too stringent, I'd be open to that trade then
