Trade idea: CHI | LAL | BRK: Ball & DeRozan to LA

Post#1 » by drosestruts » Mon Jul 1, 2024 8:02 pm

I think DeRozan eventually winds up in LA, I'm just not sure how yet, but in my thinking I thought of another Bull the Lakers could take a high risk/high reward swing on - Lonzo Ball.

Lonzo, through surgery, built a new meniscus or something crazy. It will either not work, or be a break-through surgery akin to Tommy John surgery in Baseball.

Chicago in: Rui Hachimura

Lakers in: Lonzo Ball and DeMar DeRozan (S&T w/ salary starting ~$15m)

Nets in: D'Angelo Russell

Bulls add a young forward to go along with their recent moves in acquiring 26 and under talent

Nets get an expiring Russell that fits into their existing Dinwiddie exception, doesn't interfere with 2025 free agency whee they'll have a lot of money

Lakers add DeRozan and also take the gamble on Lonzo who if healthy and able to play - would compliment them tremendously as a 3&d POA defender.

Draft capital of some kind of necessary could be added to balance things out - a 2nd or two to Brooklyn for taking on Russell who I imagine they'll try to flip again before the trade deadline.

Lakers could add a Wood, Reddish, or Hayes into the deal if needed to increase DeRozan's salary

I can't imagine the Lakers taking on Ball's almost certainly dead-weight contract in a deal like this. It would hurt the Lakers far more than moving Ball helps Chicago.

Wait, why is this not just Rui for Derozan?

Can you expand on that fellow Bull fan who created this?

Rui for DeRozan alone would put the Bulls in the tax, so it was a way of trying to thing of ways that can help DeRozan to a desired destination while avoiding the tax in Chicago - which is generally how they operate but especially now with their youth re-set in motion.

Which led me to thinking of Ball who is on the final year of his deal, and who yes hasn't played in 2.5 years.

It would certainly hurt in the upcoming season if Ball continues to be unable to play, but as an expiring contract it would not be a long-term hit to the Lakers. Heck if he can't play they could try and use his expiring deal in-season to acquire a player that could help them.

In the past three years I grew to really like DeRozan, he has a short tenure here in Chicago but he's also somehow one of my favorite Bulls of the past 20 years. I think it'd be great if the franchise could help him get to a desired location after he played very well for us over the past three years in seasons where little went right.

If Lonzo is healthy enough to play at a somewhat effective level I don't see the Bulls trading him for Rui. And conversely if he's not the Lakers wouldn't do this just for the privilege of paying DeMar more money.

It's a lot cleaner if LA just sends some 2nds or cash to help dump Jevon Carter on another team.

If Lonzo can't play the Lakers spend money on him for nothing, he still counts as salary. If he can play with the all the guards they have Reaves, Vincennt JHS, Knechte, Christie, Bronny, they add Ball who has the biggest contract. If he's healthy they can't hide him on any injured list.

The Bulls get their PF and accomplish their goal of thinning their own guard ranks to a manageable number.

ZERO interest in Ball

Injury issues too much of a concern

And the Nets are using their large TPE, going into the tax & triggering the repeater tax for free?

Sorry but this deal puts Brooklyn in the repeater tax.

We can safely assume they will do everything they can to avoid that.

Im not sure how free spending the Lakers are these days, but if they do Rui for DDR + Craig(5.5 mill expiring), I'm sure that can work
